    Disabled Veterans

    To all my fellow Veterans,

I recently received my VA Disability Rating and for those not 100% disabled how hard was it to find a career? Do you think it hindered your employability? What are your thoughts/experience?

I don't mean to be vague just trying to see what is next in life for me and how I can learn to deal with my disabilities and have a career that I can do. Just sharing your experience will be helpful. Thank you.

The VA rated me at 80%.

Depends... regular civilian or private sector job.. you do not have to tell them about your VA compensation at all.

For LEO or Federal Agencies... it can be challenging depending on your disability.

My VA disability rating was never a question in my employment.

Nor did it limit my opportunities to be employed in the field of my choice.

      It just never came up.

I had 3 written job offers while I was still on terminal leave.

I have got some DQed letters from the past from LEO positions due to my medical conditions from military service. It is what it is... just have to make best out of it.

This was one of the main reasons I never went to the VA after getting out, all the jobs (police, fire, gov) I wanted to do required physicals and I was afraid it would DQ me. Now in hindsight I probly should've just done it. I still need to go do it but just dread the mess that is the VA. I don't even want money from them, I just want them to take care of the issues that are getting worse as I get older. Good luck

The system is designed to make you QUIT.

I only claimed the ringing in my ears and got 10 percent. Right now I'm contracting in afghan working for DOS and I didn't say anything about my "disability". My clearance went through fine and I know a lot of the other guys here have a high disability rating and are still working.

Most private sector wont ask your percentage, but career field like LEO, Correction, Probation, and Fire. They or BI might ask you.

If you are 100%, most likely they are going to ask you why you are 100%.

I applied for my VA benefits after I got off from my probation period. I was afraid as well.

As long as you don't try and eat a bullet you can keep a TS clearance with the GOV and have a 100% rating. Once you go full on bat crap crazy you can't really go back from it. It's just damage control and picking up the pieces once the haze clears up.
