Dependa stories anyone?

So years ago I'm pulling gate guard for a training area.

A POV pulls up with a plainclothes woman inside and I ask nicely if I can help her. She just starts with an obnoxious tone about her sticker and asks where her salute is. I can't remember word for word, but she just rolled her eyes and shook her head.

I knew of a lot of officers in my unit, throughout company, battalion, and the S shop levels and the face wasn't familiar.

So it dawned on me her husband was an officer and she wanted a salute.



What are some ridiculous things you have heard or seen? **** is pretty funny to me.

Reminds me of a story (I don't know how true) of a new Battalion Commander going to speak to the family readiness group. He says he wants to meet all the spouses and tells the ladies to line up by rank.

Women started milling about saying things like "My husband is a Staff Sergeant" or "My husband is a Captain"

Fuming, he sounds off in a booming voice "YOU DON'T HAVE ANY RANK!!!"

^^^ Similar story when I was deployed. My Captain's wife tried assigning ranks to the wife's based on their husbands status. I don't think she realized they were all civilians.

I never heard the term "dependa" until just now. I was single when I was in the military. The thought of any dependent demanding military customs and courtesies based on their spouse's rank is completely asinine.

Unfortunately I had to deal with dependant wives at one point in my military career. Of course some were decent nice people but most were nasty tempered fat bloated cows. I got to know the older teenagers of some of the higher ups I'd give them cigs and beer (in a country where this was legal) and they would tell me interesting things about their dads.

I've only ever witnessed the Dependapotamus in the wild from afar. Never up close, and I've never interacted.

It is a right of passage for a junior enlisted service member to acquire a dependapotamus and a badly overpriced car and furniture on terrible credit terms right after boot camp. Getting addicted to dip and lots of tattoos are also options.

And the enterprising non-tobacco addicted soldiers take cans of dip to the field and flip them to all the junkies when they run out and start jonesing 1/2 way through the exercise.

Better off without one. I quickly got rid of mine, and it did not even cost me very much. Totally worth it.
