    PCS'd to California.

Hello all, I just recently PCS'd to San Diego and just had a few questions. To preface, I did read through the pinned thread on this topic but didn't notice what I was looking for.

I, like most of the free world, own an 'assault weapon'. A simple AR-15 missing a bullet button or horrendously ugly stock. My question for those who moved themselves and their guns to California is what you did about it. My current theory is that I can just install a bullet button in lieu of an actual magazine release when the rifle is in California and shoot/compete out of state.
Also, is there any way around having ownership of 30 rounders or is that an immovable object.

Also, I am in the process of building a 3gun rifle which will obviously be unsat according to the state of California- but assuming there was a way to legally store it, does anyone know of (somewhat) nearby clubs that hold 3gun matches?

    Thanks in advance.

Welcome to CA. The military sent me to San Diego 25+ years ago . . . As to your guns, start with the flow charts at the top of the page. They will step you through the various pieces of CA code and what is legal and what isn't.

As long as your rifle is not on the named list, as you mentioned, add a bullet button and it should be OK. Just be sure to permanently modify all of your 10+ round magazines before you arrive in CA or replace them (and leave the standard capacity mags out of state).

There are places to shoot 3-gun her in SoCal, we even have specific competition classes for button equipped and 10 round magazines shooters.

Thank you and Safe Travels in your military service.

Your government issued mags are all ok to own, and I know plenty of deploying units that have issued out 30 round pmags Just don't try to go shooting with them anywhere off base.

      Edit: Condolences for your orders.

I don't understand. Is he being forced out for being an ammo-grabbing fascist or for being a failure as an ammo-grabbing fascist?

I'm sorry for your loss. I got stationed here in 2005 and now that I've been out for a few years, I can't wait to leave this state.

Before you install bullet buttons, look up 'Featureless CA ar15'

It looks goofy but it allows you to maintain a useful weapon instead of a useless POS

Please keep in mind that California has two different types of "Assault Weapons" and the rules are different for each. There are the "evil by name" Assault Weapons defined in Penal Code section 30510. If your AR-15 is "evil by name", forget about the bullet button. It's still a felony to possess it in California, even with a bullet button. There are also "evil by feature" Assault Weapons. You can make these California legal either by installing a bullet button (thus defeating the "detachable magazine" element of the definition), or you can make them legal by removing all offending features.

There really isn't any legal method to legally bring in the large-capacity magazines. You can permanently modify them to 10 round capacity and be legal. The rub is that California has not defined what methods of modification are "permanent."

If you're active duty military, the law does allow you to apply for an Assault Weapons permit that will allow you to possess your Assault Weapon while here on orders. The problem is that your "Base Commander" (as opposed to a unit commander) must sign the application, you must re-apply annually, and the Base Commander must state that the weapon is required for your military duties. (Guess how likely you are to get that signature - every year).

PS: California laws only apply if you get caught. Just sayin

If you brought any handguns, you're exempt from having to register them. any handguns you purchase while in this state will however be registered.

Thanks for the information everyone- for now my goal remains the same- build a 3gun rifle that can be easily changed to be CA legal with a bullet button. As a lefty I need ambi controls with the ability to be CA legal. If anyone has suggestions, let them be known.
