    Well, got my projection....

    Hey guys,
Got my projection and it looks like I'll be going to Bragg as my first duty station. Wanted more west coast area but I'll take what I was given.

Anyone want to fill me in on the good and bad about Bragg? Idk what unit yet but hopefully soon I'll know.

Ah, I'm sorry, it sucks there. Embrace it.

I liked Bragg, not a fan of Fayetteville. There is always something going on at Bragg, you'll hear artillery impacting at the ranges and birds full of jumpers year round. It is easy to stay jump current or rack them up for stars and wreaths.

They close a lot of the post down to traffic for PT which is nice if you enjoy running. Lots of decent trails for running/ruck marching, also the post is big enough to hunt and fish on if that's your thing. Get yourself a decent ABC watch like a Suunto so you'll have a heads up on when the weather is going to turn nasty, don't forget to roll the windows up on your ride.

Fayetteville is ghetto as they come. Looking back it is a wonder I didn't end up stabbed. Try to stay away from the Fayetteville night life, don't even consider getting a girlfriend within an hour's drive from post. I stuck to this rule and it worked out great for me and a few others who ended up married to college girls from either the Chapel Hill or Winston Salem areas.

Sounds like good ol' Columbus, GA. Victory Drive just outside of Benning was a pretty unsavory place.

I spent time in Ft Huachuca and Ft Hood. Ft Huachuca is a tiny dump right on the Mexican border about 90 minutes southeast of Tucson, AZ. I dont think anybody in the Army needs an introduction to Fort Hood

With all that said. I actually loved both bases. The typical idiot who wants to hit up clubs, concerts, raves AND surf and ski all on the same day might not like most Army bases. I discovered that I actually prefer living out in the country. So if youre like me, you might love a base like Bragg. Lots of forests all around and homes are reasonably priced. (Or acreage is reasonably priced if youre like me).

I looked into Bragg seriously about a year ago while I was ETS'ing because the Army is moving all drone stuff to some place on Bragg and they are dying for contractors with FMV experience. I would have done it but theres mandatory 90 day deployments for those positions and I am done with that nonsense.

Fayetteville is supposed to be the most military friendly city in the US so definitely get enrolled in college while youre there. Classes will be cheap, the girls will be easy and the classes should be very flexible even with a weird schedule.

DONT waste your time with garbage like AMU unless you want to stay working for the gov for the rest of your life. Go to a state school if you want to learn something useful and actually go places with your degree.

I cant tell you how many jackasses I know who are wasting their money on National Security or Intel Studies degrees from AMU.

I'll mention that most community colleges in NC offer what is called a "University Transfer" associates. It guarantees admission to the nearest four year state school upon completion.

Yeah, you get the idea, Fayetteville is just 10 times larger. It is a collection of mentally ill guys that got discharged, ex-wives that were either brought there or left there...Most of the places my crew used to party at ended up on the "off limits" list and have since been shut down.

I still recall Fayettnam and the assorted collection of former military, ex and current spouses that frequented the after work locations. It used to be an understanding in the 5th SFG back in the day, that if your orders to leave Vietnam said Bragg, you should prepare a six-month extension for Vietnam.

Hopefully, it's gotten better. Be safe!

I saved this Reddit post from a while back since it perfectly described my time at Bragg. Enjoy your time!

"I'm not infantry but...oh wait yes I am. I don't know you or anything about you but let me look into my crystal ball: You will go to PT early as ****, probably run a long distance and then be released to go back to your barracks for a quick shower/jack session. You will change and eat breakfast. You will have an omlette with ham and cheese and probably a Monster because you decided to stay up and play COD til 0400.
Then you will have a 0900 work call where you will show up to the company area for formation. Your morning will consist of either details or training (or sitting around doing nothing depending on how hungover your leadership still is at that point). Then you will be released for lunch. You will probably eat some form of chicken. Then you will return and do the same thing in the afternoon only it will seem gayer than it did in the morning. Then around 1700 you will be released for the day and if you are anything like my PVT's you will go back to the barracks and drink to excess before getting caught masterbating in an inappropriate place. Then your PL or PSG (whichever one is the least drunk) will bail you out of jail. You will then wake up the next morning and do it again.
Once a month or so you will spend a week in the field wondering why you wanted to be infantry. Then every other year or so you may deploy and you will remember why you wanted to be Infantry. At some point you will marry a fat chick just to move out of the barracks and then get a divorce when she sells your dog and blows your buddy on Rear D while you're on deployment. You will also get a lame *** tattoo that you think makes you seem tough even though everyone in the company knows you're a *****. Finally, you will buy a Challenger that you can't afford, run up $30,000 in debt just in time for your discharge for pissing hot on a UA.
20 years later you will be diagnosed with jaw cancer because you spent every minute of your 3 1/2 year military carrer with a dip in your mouth. You will probably dip Skoal Mint. Or maybe Wintergreen. Enjoy!"
