Mrs. Bee and I are both legion members, our 3yo boy is a SAL and our 1yo daughter is in the women's auxiliary.. we have little time these days but our dues at least help the post..

last two years, our boy has handed out the flowers to the moms at the mothers day brunch

post 716 under commander Rodriguez does a lot of good work for local service men and women

I started out with nothing - and I still have most of it

Congrats! The Legion does a lotta good work in the community. I won the Voice of Democracy speech contest 3 years in a row in my hi skrool (early '80's), and ended up getting a $500 college scholarship out of the experience.

I remeber when I went to an IRR muster and they gave us a speech about the American Legion. They said we should join to being down the average age from 95 to 90

I think the Legion is a great organization for young veterans to be a part of, to many post's are closing due to aging membership. The post I belong to has about 50 young members and it gets pretty fun Friday and Saturday nights.

Not to mention the Legion lobbies for tons of great veteran benefits in congress.

I am pretty active with my VFW Post - whats the main difference between the Veteran's of Foreign Wars and the American Legion (... ya know, other than the "Foreign Wars" part)... mainly, if I'm already active with one, is there a reason why I should join the other? Any advantages? Any differences in mission?

^^^ I have wondered the same thing. I am a VFW member, but not really active at the local Post.

I was a VFW member for a few years. Never went to the local post and hung out or anything. Since I wasn't really doing anything my membership, I let it die. The AL sweats me all the time to join, but I'm not really that interested.

Just to help with membership dues, the dues goes to help lobby for veteran benefits on capital hill.

I went to a few Legion halls and sometimes the people were OK. I joined one year but I found that the post had an in crowd, was not friendly, and if you were not a WASP and are a younger vet it was obvious you were not as welcome. I decided to not renew membership and never looked back.

A shame too because I support their mission. I have no heirs and I planned on leaving a chunk of money to the AL but not anymore I'll just give more to the NRA.

^^^ Sorry to hear that. I have done some charity rides that have started and ended and various VFW posts, and the older Vets were always good to us.
