It's more like a cause, not the cause.

The quote just says that MTP had taken a lot of punches, with the magazine fiasco being a recent one. The douchebag got the boot before the show could get KO'd.

In fact, had that little stunt (that went largely unnoticed outside gun owners circles) boosted the ratings in a significant manner, it would have earned him a raise.
