ATF to expand multiple rifle sales reporting

"A little noticed and virtually unreported April 15 notice posted in the Federal Register suggests the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco Firearms and Explosives intends expanding the multiple rifle sale requirement currently imposed on four border states (Arizona, California, New Mexico and Texas) to all states."

Isn't this how it always work? they use fear to get things started and then BLAM!!everybody is a threat and we have to take away more freedoms to protect us from the boogie man.

funny thing is that the biggest gun runner via mexico is the us government

      The usual incrementalism.

Keep it with the rest of the examples of "slippery slope" and have it ready in discussions when someone is trying to claim you are paranoid.

Reading the linked doc, the third update, seems to confirm that this is an extension of the existing regulation applicable to only the four border states with Mexico.

Has the ATF stopped exporting, yet? Reference Fast and Furious.

Just more of the usual: bureacracies seek to increase their own power despite any legal limitations.

They already have filing cabinets full of multiple-sales reports on many of us due to multiple handgun purchases.

It may be the best way to deal with this is for us all to buy rifles two (or more) at a time.

Well, those of use who live in states where that's possible, anyway.
People don't like to be meddled with. We tell them what to do, what to think, don't run, don't walk. We're in their homes and in their heads and we haven't the right. We're meddlesome.

You're correct. When I posted they didn't have the updated info.

"UPDATE 3: The new notice estimates the same number of hours as on the original : "In fiscal year 2010, 36,148 reports of multiple sales of hand guns sales were submitted by FFLs in the four southwest border states. ... we estimate we will receive 18,074 reports of multiple sale of the specified rifles from FFLs located in the four southwest border states. We estimate that each report will take 12 minutes to complete. If we receive 18,074 reports from 2,509 licensees the total burden is 3,615 hours. The estimated annual burden per respondent is 1 hour and 26 minutes."

That said, the earlier notice provided a key bit of information missing from this latest one: "This requirement will apply only to Federal Firearms Licensees (FFLs) who are dealers and/or pawnbrokers in Arizona, California, New Mexico and Texas."

Sorry for the false alarm, although I do believe this crooked practice and fallacy needs to end, especially considering the precedent (operation fast and furious) used to justify this expansion was itself created by government.

There is always talk of being on "lists" and because of OF&F and subsequent policy abuse I can only assume a large percentage of gun owners in border states are on a shared ATF list because of the multiple purchasing requirement.

This is especially true for us in CA. They force us to wait 10 days and pay a DROS fine to exercise our rights, so it's only smart to save and purchase multiple rifles at once. When you think about it, it's a creative way to gather an accurate list of people the government would most like to stifle.
