Reason.com... Gun Owners Would Have Reason To Fear A Registry

Interesting... New Zealand Keeps Doxxing Registered Gun Owners Using what's happening in New Zealand to point out...

A data breach in New Zealand exposed the personal information of some of the country's gun owners, and not for the first time. It's another indication of how even well-intended government policies can become civil liberties nightmares....

In the U.S., national gun owner registries are prohibited by federal law, though they do exist in some form in certain states, and some progressive lawmakers and advocates support wider adoption. Giffords, the gun control advocacy organization named for former Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D?Ariz.) who was shot and nearly killed while in office, says registries are "a useful method of curbing illegal gun activity and encouraging responsible gun practices." Sen. Cory Booker (D?N.J.) proposed a national licensing system for gun owners in 2019 as part of his presidential campaign platform.

Gun owners would have reason to fear that a registry today could be used to confiscate guns tomorrow. Not to mention, a plan like Booker's would require the federal government to keep accurate and copious records so as not to accidentally arrest the wrong person - not exactly its strong suit. There's also the issue of noncompliance: In New Zealand, it's estimated that somewhere between one-third and one-half of all newly forbidden weapons were actually turned in. In neighboring Australia, often touted as an example of gun control done well, only about one-fifth of banned weapons are estimated to have been turned in.

But the events in New Zealand demonstrate an underappreciated downside to government registries: the possibility that such a mass of personal information could be leaked or otherwise improperly accessed...
Haven't we already observed similar 'leaks' here in the States which have created problems for gun owners over things like CCW's?

    You know...

Deputy DA sues Bonta over CCW "breach"

CA DOJ Leak of CCW and Firearm Purchaser PII

AG Bonta releases report on CCW data leak

DID THE DOJ CCW LEAK INCLUDE HIGH-RANKING POLITICIANS??

    CCW data spill??? spam emails?

Viacom-CBS Has the leaked CCW List Now

Media wants to ID CCW Holders

Don't we already have myriad other threads related to things like so-called "assault weapon" registration here in California and arrests/confiscations which resulted from that?

Isn't this why the Left keeps pushing for such things; i.e., not necessarily so much to immediately confiscate guns, but to make examples (whether legally or not) of some gun owners to chivvy the rest?

What was that about: "And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother's eye, but considerest not the beam that is in thine own eye?"

Democrats no longer even hide their intent to totally ban semi-automatic firearms.

Registration today only facilitates confiscation tomorrow. After the semi-automatic guns, the rest will follow, just like in every other country.
A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.

The Second Amendment makes us citizens, not subjects. All other enumerated rights are meaningless without gun rights.

That is why you should live in a state that prohibits registration of firearms, preferably in the state's constitution.

To me, even the ATF Form 4473 is potential gun registration. Because it could be used as such if future laws make it so.

But that becomes moot in our red states where parking lot cash and carry PPT is common

Gun registration is different than the 4473. Registration, ostensibly, keeps track of who has possession and where the firearm is... NOW. All the 4473 indicates is who purchased it.

With that said, the 4473 has longed served as a 'step' in the ability to track a firearm's possession and some agencies were becoming not-so-nice if you didn't have a receipt which they could utilize to continue the tracking. In one sense, it is not your responsibility (or didn't used to be) to keep track. In another sense, as they've tightened the laws, it's become increasingly difficult to 'get away with' claiming you don't/can't remember. Well... at least in our blue states.

I agree registration leads to confiscation.

                  Ghost guns are a thing.

Private sales in free states elude registry efforts.

Just look at what the AGs office did with the CCW info and what not, they'll do that with gun registration as well.

That's the same in California, to a slightly lesser degree.

Evil little rat journalists would love nothing more than to sift through leaked gun databases to dig up dirt and air the soiled laundry of their political enemies.
