Anyone have experience with moving to CA with a large number of handguns (50+)?

Any problems encountered when trying to register them, that sort of thing...

No roster problems. No threaded barrels. No mags over 10 rounds. Must register them with the state within X days of moving into state. Some cities have storage requirements - you'll want a safe anyway.

Threaded barrels are 110% legal on handguns in CA except for semi auto handguns with detachable magazines. Mags over 10 rounds are fine IF you actually possessed those mags in CA prior to 1-1-2000. So, if you visited CA with the mags prior to 1-1-2000 or even just drove through the state with them, you can legally bring them back to CA.

New Resident Report of Firearm Ownership

Attach extra pages to add more then the 3 open spots on the form:
(To report additional firearm(s) copy and attach additional applications)
Send along $19 for the whole form (not per firearm)
        $19.00 processing fee
(check or money order made payable to the Department of Justice)
And in about a month you will receive a letter that has each handgun on its own separate page stating that it is now registered.

When you transport them into the state make sure they are in a locked container unloaded. Magazines can be in the same container. Trigger and cable locks don't count towards locked container for transportation.

When I moved to CA, before I left again, I think I paid $19 per firearm. I'll have to check my records. The state happily took that money.

Is the $19 total a change or has it always been that way.

It use to be $19 per firearm.
Now it is $19 per form submission.

                Yup! Much nicer now!
Especially with vistula having 50+, jez that would be like 1K just in fee's. I have a feeling that they changed it to help with people being in compliance because if you had to drop a grand to register.. doubt many would.

I didn't have 50, but I can tell you from personal experience there's no problem with 10 guns. The DOJ will take your money and send you some letters stating they've processed the paperwork for the guns.

That's encouraging, thanks. I'm sure there are some gun-friendly people working there. After all, they don't actually make the laws.

Glad to know I didn't fail at reading comprehension back then. That would've pissed me off.

                      Thanks.

Sounds like you're going to make the database punchers work for that $19 lol. Welcome to CA

Correct answers to your questions have already been provided. I will only add that you click on the "CA Handgun Ban ID Flowchart" link near the top of every page and verify that all your handguns are in compliance by following the flowchart steps.

I believe you can bring off roster guns into California (someone correct me I'm wrong). So if you even think you might want a certain gun in the future buy it before you move to California. California is very restrictive on the types of guns that can be sold here. That said, welcome to the Golden State.

Also, buy a 10-pack of stripped lowers out of state and register them as handguns when you move here. One of the few ways to legally build AR pistols in CA. If you need to sell them later, you will make a nice profit.
