    IPSC Matches

How can I legally come into California and compete in IPSC matches with a handgun which uses the "large capacity" magazines--or can I? How do competitors avoid an unknowing violation of California's voluminous firearms laws when entering the state---especially from states where such items are NOT illegal to possess and use?

According to CA DOJ, there is supposed to be a mechanism for granting large capacity magazine permits, but I don't know of any out-of-state competitor being issued one. If you are shooting Production, then you'll be OK with 10-rd magazines. If you shoot Open then you're out of luck and will have to use 10-rd magazines, in which case you can shoot Limited 10, but Open is still out of luck.
Where are you shooting now? Is it too cold to hold matches where you live?

GT 10 mags are not illegal to possess or use here, either - but they have been illegal to import, even temporarily, or to sell/transfer to CA residents, since 2000.

So, no, out of state competitors may not legally bring 10+ capacity magazines into CA.

Frozen in 2015, it is falling out of date and I can no longer edit the content. But much of it is still good!

          AFAIK...
Because of magazine capacity laws; IPSC limits magazine capacity to 10 rounds in matches in California, Hawaii, and Canada.

Now you know why there's no major matches in CA. There is a competition exemption in the law but not one for the magazines. Just use someone else's high caps.

Likewise when a bunch of Californians decided it would be fun to shoot in the Hawaii state championship a lot of people shot single stack because even the production guys mostly had magazines that were grandfathered in CA but couldn't be brought to Hawaii.

Isnt it illegal to 'loan' full cap mags too?

                Stupid cali...

                  Exemptions:
One can temporarily loan a large-capacity magazine to another person who is eligible to possess firearms and within the immediate vicinity of the owner of the large-capacity magazine - most commonly at a range.
