    Transfer/Inheritance Question

So I've searched and gone throughout the posts under keyword "deceased" and I can't seem to find the right answer. So here's the situation my gf's dad was given a Remington Rand M1911A1 by his second cousin's widow when he passed. However, they no longer talk to the widow but they still see the decedents brother. The gun was registered in the state of NV. Is there a way to register the gun to my gf's dad then PPT it to me. I want to have it checked out to see if it can still be used and also the value of it. The gun has markings of US Army and UNITED STATES PROPERTY. The serial number matches the registration card from NV. Please advise. Thank you

    Some questions:

In what year did the transfer occur?

In what state was the widow a resident when the gun was transferred?

When your GF's dad received the gun, in what state was he a resident?

In what state is he a resident now?

Frozen in 2015, it is falling out of date and I can no longer edit the content. But much of it is still good!

The unofficial transfer was done 10+ years ago. They lived in NV. And her dad always lived here in CA

Federal law requiring the use of an FFL for interstate transfers began in 1968. A transfer to a CA resident from an NV resident should have gone through an FFL in California. See also http://wiki.calgunsfoundation.org/Tr...rms_Interstate

Water under the bridge after 10 years. But Federal law has no approved 'do over'.

Not necessary. On a PPT, the ownership is not checked, because registration - telling the state - is not a condition of ownership.

^ So from what you are saying it can be registered to me here in CA. Are there any risks I'm taking on to accept this gun? Or are there any risk to my gf's dad? Because the way I look at it the gun appeared in the "system" and it will ask what happened between the last 10+ years

The only check done on the handgun is if it was stolen. The seller has no check on ownership. Buyer undergoes dros and waits the 10 days. Seller can only do ftf with a ca id . Person in possession of 1911 now can ship to your ffl if they accept direct shipments.

Lots of guns are not registered; that's not a problem.

Remington-Rand 1911 from the 1940s should be C&R, so either the PPT from CA-resident girlfriend's father, or shipment to your local FFL (presuming they are OK with it) should work.

The most important consideration is: if you fail to marry your girl friend is her dad going to want the gun back?!

"Everyone must determine for themselves what level of tyranny they are willing to tolerate.
I let my CA residency expire in 2015."
