Can a named AW be made legal by re-stamp a named and put a mag-lock on it?

    No.

Altering a manufacturer's markings would violate Federal and CA laws.

Ummmm... while you are right as an individual basis, DOJ did participate in this back in 2006.

My approximate recall after a half decade...

.... Evan's Gunsmithing/GBSales (or whatever related entity) was selling, in late 2005-thru most of 2006 timeframe "welded up" closed-magwell banned-by-name Colt and Bushmaster guns. These were apparently done with the oversight of the infamous DOJite Iggy Chinn. They were charging huge amounts for these guns. It appears Evans & Iggy had a very cordial relationship that this went thru without issue while other FFLs were attacked and charged for non-law [for legally aiding in lawful disposal of estate AWs.]

There was a big half-day internal DOJ FD meeting in Oct 2006 - which was probably a mix of "WTF do we do about Iggy?" and "How do we clean this s**t up?".

[You might remember Iggy's quotes from his 'approval' letters for the Vulcan receivers that had a pinned fixed mag - "takes it out of the Stoner series" - and which has no legal relevance: it's either named, or it's not. It's either described by an SB23 configuration, or not.

Manufacturer permits were taken out by Evans/GB in short order and these guns became "Evans-Colt" and "Evans-Bushmaster" - I believe past customers were contacted to come in for re-marking of their banned-by-name guns.... "the cat was walked back."

This episode also brought out note of something perhaps useful in defense of cases involving certain 'named guns' (useful but not guaranteed)...

... while Colt "Match Target" rifles were banned in late 2000 on the 11CCR5499 "Kasler" list of formally-identified "series" guns, Iggy stated that the specific model of one of the Colt guns used by Evans/GB was a Colt MT6400 (or whatever, can't remember exact #).

[However that couldn't clear up their Bushmaster XM15 situation, and I am unsure of how many as-marked true Colt AR15s they moved.]

        From some other forum, Hkpro.com
I'm getting ready to restamp my HK91 to G3K. The company that is making the stamp for me can also make the HK logo stamp as well as the Cal.7,62x51 stamp. So I'm not sure how I should do the layout. Here are my choices: 1) Leave everything like the factory 91 layout... HK G3K A xxxxxx 2)...

I think people are just doing it for cosmetic purpose in other states.
I guess the FFL or gunsmith will need a manufacturing license.

I mean if its not on the list, it should be ok right?
like HK did with 911 that was originally stamped 91 just to sell to CA.

I know that federally it was not illegal to take an HK94 and have the model number welded over and changed to be an MP5. Doing that did not make an illegal firearm. It was still a title I firearm. It wasn't an MG just because it said MP5, and as long as they didn't alter the serial number it was legal to do so.

now, if that "MP5" marked HK firearm was later found in CA, would it be an illegal RR AW because at one point it was an HK94? What if the current owner did not know that it was a remarked firearm?

edit: too slow. The OP covered it.

Do you want an AOW or C&R SBS/SBR in CA?
