    DROS and sales tax

A question for those of you who may have expert opinions - When purchasing a firearm, should the DROS be added to the price before or after sales taxes are calculated?

My thinking is that since it is a state fee (or tax) on its own, it shouldn't be taxed any further.

Looking at the receipt from a recent purchase, where it was added before sales tax made me wonder if the shop has their register set up wrong, or if this is the way it's supposed to be. I don't remember paying sales taxes on DROS on earlier purchases, but can't remember that far back (I do not buy guns that often).

I looked back at a few recent receipts and I see no tax on DROS. Plus, logically to me, there would be no tax on DROS.

Similar to this topic are those shops charging tax on shipping. Buy a gun at $800, pay $25 to ship, some want to tax you on $825 not $800.

As well, no tax on a "transfer fee" - shops fee to accept a gun from outside their shop you did not buy from them.

No tax on the DROS fee.

In California an "undocumented" shipping charge usually is taxable, as is a combined "shipping and handling" charge.
