    Residency requirements to purchase firearms

How long do you need to be a resident of California to purchase firearms?

I know the answer is out there in cyber space somewhere, but I cannot find it, Thanks in advance for your help.

About as long as it takes to obtain an ID, and proof of residency. I don't think there is a set time limit, but you need to have some form of gov't issued ID and something to prove residency.

So my California DMV issued DL alone is not enough? I also need something with my address, utility bill or something similar?

Not enough for a handgun. For a handgun, you MUST have a secondary proof of residency.

Regarding "Other evidence of residency", would a government passport of naturalization papers work as a 2nd form? I would imagine a passport should since it has address and an expiration date. Reason I ask is my friends wife just became a citizen and none of the utilities or deed have her name on them. 2 different LGS have said it absolutely has to be utility or lease. Penal code reads otherwise. Thanks in advance.

US passports don't include an address.

It depends on the FFL. I recently did a PPT with one that wanted a utility bill. I had driven a few hours away from home for this one. Locally, FFLs first choice is car registration. The FFL would not accept my car registration. So I pulled out my C&R. and she did not like that either. It had to be a utility bill.

In the binder I carry with me for every gun purchase, I pulled out a copy of the regulations and showed her the other documents acceptable as proof of residency. At that point I even pulled out my NV CCW because it is a state issued permit with all the required information and additionally has my picture. Even my CA fishing license has all the required information.

She got on the phone to the DOJ and confirmed what I was telling her was true.

So, it depends on the FFL and how knowledgable they are. I bring several documents that will fit the requirement so the FFL can choose the one they are comfortable with. Again, locally to me that is car registration. I also carry a copy of the regulations just in case because there are too many and sometimes you just need to educate the FFL.

Some people do not like to take a chance and the utility bill, lease, or deed is spelled out specifically. The other gives a generic description so one has to decide if the document before him meets all the requirements. Make a mistake and the FFL 01 is in danger.
Anyone can look around and see the damage to the state and country inflicted by bad politicians.

A vote is clearly much more dangerous than a gun.

Why advocate restrictions on one right (voting) without comparable restrictions on another (self defense) (or, why not say 'Be a U.S. citizen' as the requirement for CCW)?
