LA County letter for purchasing firearm? How do I stop this?

    Hi,

(I've searched this forums but couldn't find an answer. I apologize beforehand if I overlooked any obvious resources!)Every time I've purchased a firearm I received a letter from LA county to my LA residence. I don't purchase often so when I got a call from renters that I received mail from the county I was surprised but knew what it was.

Anyway to stop this? I just assumed that purchasing outside of the county wouldn't yield this letter but it did. Do they go off the address on the DL or something else? I'd appreciate any advice, I'd like to stop these letters if possible. Thinking changing the address on my DL to current temporary residence up here in NorCal might fix it. My car and mailing was changed to up here except DL. Thinking that might be the culprit.

    Any thoughts?

You can't stop them sending the pesky mail. I got it every time I bought gun & I live at LA city. They use your DL address

I have still yet to receive one. I live in LA county but not the city of Los Angeles.

Change the address on your DL to match your current address. Since that appears to be out of LA based upon your stated location.

Oddly, they haven't sent me any thank you letters for any of the firearms I've sold!

Berkeley is not Nor cal it is the bay area. Not much difference than LA area.
California's politicians and unionized government employees are a crime gang that makes the Mexican drug cartels look like a Girl Scout Troop in comparison.

Perhaps a "form letter" can be sent to them every time we purchase a gun, informing them of our access to free legal representation from Calguns Foundation (if they screw up) and our watchful eyes, monitoring their actions as a LEA, as well as the DA office...and the right to sue should wrongful arrests occur.

I know, dumb idea, just spewing hyperbole...

Just make sure you sign it as "a free citizen", and don't put a return address on it.

Why do you care if they send you a letter?
Don't want to see it? Directly to the shredder or return unopened to them.

If someone else is living at the address (you have rented it out), it is not your residence, even though you own the property.

You are required by law to change the address on your license to your current residence within 10 days of moving.

                    CVC 14600.
                    (a) Whenever any person after applying for or receiving a driver’s license moves to a new residence, or acquires a new mailing address different from the address shown in the application or in the license as issued, he or she shall within 10 days thereafter notify the department of both the old and new address. The department may issue a document to accompany the driver’s license reflecting the new address of the holder of the license.

                    ETA:

                    (Amended by Stats. 1992, Ch. 1243, Sec. 86.4. Effective September 30, 1992.)

That's interesting. How long as this requirement been on the books, and what's the penalty for not doing so?

Most people I know don't bother updating their address with the DMV until it's time to renew their car registration. That's usually well outside of 10 days.

I also recall taking a traffic class back in the early 90s. The instructor was an LAPD homicide detective. He specifically that everyone rent a private mailbox (UPS Store type of thing) and put that address on your driver's license. He said it was common for LEO to do so, since the DMV at the time would sell your info to anyone and everyone for a few bucks.

Just treat it the same way you treat other junk mail.

I added the enactment info. It looks like that section was last amended in 1992.

The law requires both the residence and a separate mailing address to be kept updated with any changes.

ETA: Penalty is an infraction, can be treated as "correctable" at the citing officer's discretion. Total Bail if not correctable $238, may be higher in certain counties.

Yeah, but it is bothersome. Regular junk mail isn't. It is coming from elected government officials. And it is the government telling you they are watching you. And using your tax money for idiotic reasons. If you do a multi gun purchase or PPT, they will stuff identical copies of the letter into one envelope. How is that for stupid.
