Today, 2014, sans antiques must go through a dealer for the transfer. Maybe you meant to say he's letting you borrow them for a cleaning and he will transfer them to you at a later date.

If he wants to give the rifles to his Grand daughter he can fill out the Interfamily transfer form and send it to DOJ.

If he wants to give the rifles to you, you both need to go to a shop and do a PPT.

Make sure that the one rifle is not full auto before doing either one.

Back then and up to more recently rifles/shotguns were not registered. Other states still do not register them. If you got them last year they would not be registered in Ca.

This is not true of full-auto weapons. They had to be registered and the tax paid.

The firearms were initially acquired and imported into the USA before 1968.

If he wants to give/sell the firearms, he will need to comply with current laws and the transfer must go through a CA FFL dealer.

If he wants to give the firearms to his granddaughter, then he can just give them to her and she will need to report the transfer to CA DOJ.

If one of the firearms is a Title 2 MG, it should have been registered with the ATF per the Gun Control Act of 1968. Which gave WW2 veterans an limited amnesty period (1 year) to register any Title 2 firearms they brought back. If the Title 2 firearm was not registered under this amnesty period, then it is an unregistered Title 2 firearm, which is a Federal felony to possess.

It could be converted, but it still wouldn't be legal. The Feds consider once full auto, always full auto.

That pertains to the serialized receiver though, the rest is a parts kit. Not sure how that affects a full auto without a serial number (are there any full autos without serial numbers? And should one convert this to semi how would you tell it was originally full auto?)

I'd probably get more info on the firearm and search the internet to make sure it was full auto. If it was I would remove the offending receiver and turn it in at a "buy back" for the no questions asked advantage. Even if the receiver could be questionable or a "reasonable doubt" as to full auto I wouldn't keep it around. Probably cost to much in time, hassle, and money if you were questioned by the Government over it.
