Are pre-ban rifles like Colt Sporter Match HBAR exempt from AWB?

I have a prevan rifle. If I wanted to take it into California legally, would I need to get a grip fin or one of those non-protruding grips?

I am inclined to believe the answer is yes but just checking.

There is no "pre ban" recognized. Way back when, there was a registration period. Anything named or configured an aw config got registered and is grandfathered. After that, the grip fins and other solutions kicked in.

AFAIK, if that rifle is on "the list", and it didn't get registered in the 1990s, it can't come in no matter what you do to it. An identical rifle that's not on the list can be configured legally.

Well looks like I can’t take that one with me. I don’t really want to buy a Mini-14 Ranch Rifle for going into CA but it looks like I’ll need to now.

Thanks for the succinct explanation. Although it would be probably cheaper to have a featureless AR for CA use, I don’t want to own one.

I’m probably going to get a Mini-14 Ranch and then buy an A-TM stock for it., just to spite old Bill Ruger. Either that or buy a Chinese SKS that I’m not worried s about getting confiscated/stolen. The downside of the SKS is the ammo is less available, but it would make a poor man’s Mini-30.

The A-TM stock is a no go in California. The SKS will have to have its original fixed magazine configuration to be California legal.

Colt Sporter banned by name, but if your familiar with how to do it, you could swap out the lower with an inexpensive Anderson or PSA , install a fin grip and remove the flash hider. Cheaper than buying a Mini

Unfortunately the PRK will see it as an unreg AW,. if you really like that rifle strip it down and move everything over to a OLL and BB it up... ohh wait, can't BB up anymore so fin the hell out it and lock the mag i guess...so stupid. Should just go Airsoft at this point..lol

If you’ve already made the gun featureless, there’s no need to lock the mag in place.
