"An excise, or excise tax, is any duty on manufactured goods that is normally levied at the moment of manufacture for internal consumption rather than at sale. It is therefore a fee that must be paid in order to consume certain products."

      It's a use tax.

CA has various use tax for items that are used within California.

Since 1935, CA has a history of calling their various use taxes as an excise tax.

Per the US Internal Revenue Service...

Excise taxes are taxes imposed on certain goods, services, and activities. Taxpayers include importers, manufacturers, retailers, and consumers, and vary depending on the specific tax. Excise taxes may be imposed at the time of:
      • Entry into the United States, or sale or use after importation
      • Sale or use by the manufacturer
      • Sale or use by the retailer
      • Use by the consumer

I do not see this as an excise tax because it is collected everytime the item is sold (excluding private party transfers). A true excise tax is collected at time of manufacture or initial sale. It is not applied or collected on subsequent sales of a used item.
This is really part of the state's grand scheme to force gun dealers out of business by putting ever bigger hurdles in the way of anyone trying to acquire a firearm.

That's great. But considering how poor service is at SW, they'd have to give me a 100% discount to go in there to get a gun from them. They make Turners look competent.

I understand your point. But you are missing my point which is that SW is so bad I'd only put up with them if I was getting a gun for free.

Having dealt with SW before, you might be there for hours waiting to fillout paperwork and possibly even longer for pickup. Given I have had to deal with that in the past, I'll pass as well. Shouldn't have to spend hours esp on pickup. The locations I have been to have nice people who work there and most of them I have dealt with appear competent. The problem is they are often short staffed at the gun counter or everyone is at lunch at the same time. Other stores depending on your location are offering 11% sales as well.

Shopping experiences vary. I just picked up 2 guns at Sportsman's. Walked up to the counter and was greeted, pulled a number, got the guns with the discount and walked out. Total time in store was 30 mins.

You can also make an appointment for pickup which gives you priority at the counter.

BUT the point of the post was to point out that some vendors are trying to ease the blow of this BS tax. Personal shopping problems aren't the point.

bit of a necro post, but I paid my first 11% tax today. My LGS has it as a line item on the invoice, marked "Newsom's Sin Tax". Yes, it says that literally on my receipt.
