    Shipping container Firearm storage

I am having a hard time finding information on the legality of using an ocean shipping container for firearm storage in CA. Per Bonta's approved container rules they meet the sheet metal thickness requirements, locking and the "hammer/ screwdriver ingress in 5 minute test". Does anyone have any input?

Referring to this, I suppose: https://oag.ca.gov/firearms/gunsafe

First, 'legality' does not apply to storage. You can store guns wherever you like; there are penalties if prohibited persons or juveniles get unauthorized access.

Portantino's SB53 is still active, with a hearing scheduled June 4. Should that pass, it requires using a storage device actually listed on the roster of firearm safety devices - so the 'safe' description does not apply.

I think you would find little agreement that a CONEX box is a 'gun safe'. See also https://containerone.net/blogs/news/...ainer-security

EDIT: a quick look suggests an angle grinder will open a CONEX box with no problem, but that's true of the 'listed' firearms safety devices that are containers, as well as RSC-5 rated boxes.

Frozen in 2015, it is falling out of date and I can no longer edit the content. But much of it is still good!

If the guns had an approved gun lock on them inside the container, that should be good?

        Current text is
        25145.

        (a) Beginning on July 1, 2025, except when carried by or under the control of the owner or other lawfully authorized user, a person shall not keep or store a firearm in any residence owned or controlled by that person, unless the firearm meets both of the following conditions:

        (1) It is stored in

        (2) It is properly engaged so as to render that firearm inaccessible by any person other than the owner or other lawfully authorized user.
so, if this passes as current, no, locks would not be sufficient.

EDIT: that would be OK now, of course, without regard to the pending bill.

Maybe it's just too obvious or I'm not thinking it through, but if this bill was to become law, how is it going to be enforced? We still have a 4th Amendment, last I checked.

As far as using a conex box for storage, I'm not sure I would without some form of climate control.

It seems to me the only it could be enforced would be if the police needed to enter your premises for other reasons with probable cause. Then, they could verify proper firearm storage.
There was also a bill that proposed required your home insurance to include verification of firearms owned and storage, but I don't know if that bill went anywhere.

Shipping containers are easy to get in if you don't secure them properly. The locking tabs are a joke and any tweeker can bust the lock off in less than 30 seconds.

There are a ton of solutions out there, but I highly recommend the "SnatchLatch" and an ABUS 3755.
