I have the opportunity to visit your state and stay with a friend. He wants me to bring my AR-15 that I legally purchased in another state. I know there are strict laws there but I had an idea. I was thinking I could just remove the gas block and tube, then replace it with another gas block that I install upside down. I am hoping this gives me a legal California bolt action firearm. Does anyone know if this is acceptable in your state. It will still have the evil look but with one of your compliant magazines, I expect to have a bolt action AR that requires me to pull back on the charging between each shot combine with one of your low capacity mags I would expect it to be ok, but want to confirm before I try it. Does anyone know if this will work? To me it seems like an easy affordable way to abide by California law and still get to do a little shooting with my friend

If you get a compmag that would be the quickest solution assuming it's not an NFA regulated firearm.UG Imports - Fremont, CA FFL - Transfers, New Gun Sales

Agree on the compmag, they suck but will allow you to keep semiauto and return to regular rifle in seconds when you return home.Comment

Doing what you asked, will make the firearm no longer semi-auto and would make the firearm into a straight pull bolt-action firearm.I have the opportunity to visit your state and stay with a friend. This type of modification has been in use since 01-01-2000 to make firearms CA legal.
After this is done on a rifle, in order to ensure it is CA legal, the barrel length needs to be 16" or greater and the overall length needs to be 26" or greater and it can not be chambered in .50BMG.
CA measures overall length with the firearm in the shortest possible firing configuration (stock folded/collapsed).
However, there are some firearms that are make/model banned as assault weapons and nothing can be done to legally make those CA legal.
So, the first thing you need to determine is if your firearm is make/model banned as an assault weapon.Last edited by Quiet; 07-27-2022, 3:34 PM.sigpic

I was wondering same thing but I got a pistol ar. Was gonna see if I install a mag lock then find a 10 round mag.
My a2 was an sb23 RAW when I moved to az I never deregistered it incase I decide to visit for a shoot. But I know pistol will need to be neutered.Comment
