Selling bolt action to resident of AZ

I will be selling a 1940 K98k to a friend who resides in Arizona. When I purchased the rifle a few years back I did it through a CA FFL so the rifle is registered in my name in CA. AZ is obviously much looser in its requirements for the transfer of a bolt action rifle.

I’m thinking the most cost effective way to do this would be to drive it over the AZ border and do the sale and then notify CA that I am no longer in possession of the rifle. Would I be doing something here that violates a law?

Much looser on anything not just "bolt action".

As noted, so long as you do the transfer using an AZ FFL, you're good.

I recommend NOT telling CA anything at all - it is not required, and asks for detailed buyer info.

Frozen in 2015, it is falling out of date and I can no longer edit the content. But much of it is still good!

Federal laws apply to cross-state sales, so as said you and he both need to use an AZ dealer. Really exactly the same as if he was selling the same rifle to you in CA, there's no difference. No matter how much looser AZ laws are, they don't apply that way to your sale. Depending on where exactly you and he are driving, it might in fact be easier to ship it to his FFL, if they'll take it directly from you.

If the buyer has a C&R, don't think there is any need for an FFL.
