1911 mags that are 8+, but still under 10

    Hey, y'all.

I was just chatting with a friend about finding additional mags for my Springfield 1911 .45ACP and he said to get Wilson Combat mags. The ones I found were 8 rnd mags and he said that he remembers reading somewhere that any magazine extending passed the frame of a pistol is illegal in CA....even if it's 10 rounds or under.

My question is ..... which one is it and what law specifically covers it???

    A) 10 rounds are 10 rounds, regards of magazine size.

    or

    B) Cannot extend passed the frame of the firearm, even if the magazine's capacity is under 10 rounds.

I did do some searching and I found a thread that several people stated the former, but no CA Penal Code was linked/quoted....which is why I'm here. To get confirmation of one or the other.

PS : I apologize to fellow Calgunners and mods if this has been asked before. I just couldn't find out one way or the other WITH a law being quoted. Either on here or with Google. I only found the "10 round mag limitation" laws, but no reference to 10 rnds (or under) mags extending passed the frame of a pistol.

Thank you all for you time.

Your friend is wrong. There is no concept in the law about a mag that extends below the frame.

The limit is 10 rounds in a mag. That is the only restriction.

Here's the definition from Penal Code:
          16740.

As used in this part, “large-capacity magazine” means any ammunition feeding device with the capacity to accept more than 10 rounds, but shall not be construed to include any of the following:

          (a) A feeding device that has been permanently altered so that it cannot accommodate more than 10 rounds.

          (b) A .22 caliber tube ammunition feeding device.

          (c) A tubular magazine that is contained in a lever-action firearm.
The law has "no reference to 10 rnds (or under) mags extending passed the frame of a pistol."

I have had issues with Chip McCormick powermags as well. Consistent failures to feed. With two rounds left in my Kimber Custom II

To be fair, this confusion could stem from a butchered reading of...

PC 30515 (a)(4)(D) The capacity to accept a detachable magazine at some location outside of the pistol grip.
...but I think it’s pretty well understood that this is talking about having a magazine well other than in the pistol grip, not what the OP’s friend is talking about.

Up to 10 rounds is fine. If your friend was correct then there would be plenty of OEM CA compliant handguns that were not legal.

Wilson ETM 8 round mags is what I use in my Colt and my Kimber. They work great.
