the person at DMV told me if "replacing" my current DL with Real ID more than 90 days before it expires I had to take the Knowledge test. to get a Real ID good for 5 years. Otherwise it would just "replace" my current DL and expire next year.

Can confirm - I had to take the test since my license was set to expire mid-year next year.
