Flying out of state with registered BBAW

I am planning on flying out of state on vacation with a BBAW (AR10). I completed the BBAW registration in late June. My application shows as pending. I'm leaving in a month, so there's a good chance my application will not have been processed before leaving.

I'm flying to a gun friendly state (no BB laws, etc.)

Is there anything special I need to do? I was planning on separating the upper and lower, putting a cable lock through the magwell, and printing out my registration paperwork.

I called TSA. They were friendly but the person I was talking to didn't inspire confidence.

Anyone have experience doing this or things to watch for?

    Thanks for the help!

California doesn't care what you do when you take a gun out of the state.

They may care if you bring it back in. For example, if they decline your app, you could theoretically be pegged for importation of an "assault weapon."

Personally, I wouldn't take it out of the state until you got your papers back.

We are literally saying the opposite. Separate the upper, lower and BCG. It's no longer an AW. Import/Export at will. Just follow TSA rules.

          Nope.

It's illegal to assemble/manufacture a BBAW since 2018. You can look at various other threads that discuss whether a disassembled firearm actually changes its status as an AW or not. Regardless, it's moot.

If you were to make something NOT and BBAW and then later MAKE it an BBAW, you're then assembling/making an illegal configuration. You can do this if it is already registered, at this moment, it's not. You might not even be covered IF the registration was GOING TO be issued, but you were caught before it was actually documented with the state.

Regardless, in order to travel with a BBAW, you need to have the BBAW paperwork with you AND imposes destination/transportation requirements.

The exemption that allows for possession is only valid until 07-01-2018.

There is no exemption that allows for possession while your assault weapons registration application is being processed after 06-30-2018.

            IMO...
If your assault weapons registration is still pending, then starting 06-30-2018, do the following until your assault weapons registration application is resolved:
            1. Disassemble the firearm into parts.
            2. Store the parts in different locked containers.

Keep in mind that your application being resolved can go two ways, approved or rejected.
Simply submitting the application is no guarantee that it will be approved.

^Thank you for the crisp answer. Great point.

I separated the uppers and lowers and locked them up separately on the 30th. It seemed like a superabundance of caution at the time. Now, less so.

              Thanks!
