I tried it for about 2 weeks, until we dealt with a bar fight in a biker bar, (and the parking lot, and the middle of the road) in town, and found it not nearly as effective as my good old 29" straight stick. It went back into the locker, and never saw the dark of night again on my belt.

Thanks for the replies. Sad to see the state of affairs. A homeless person can take a dump on the sidewalk in front of my apartment building in Toluca Lake ( of all places), but i cant carry a baton in my car. This state sucks.

Will look into the other options y'all mentioned.

They aren't inexpensive, but you'll get a cane that you can carry anywhere that will do the job of protecting yourself. I've got one for when my knee acts up. It's a hell of a lot sturdier than the one I got from from the Dr. after the last surgery.

          Wellllll

I do not even think about it. I own 2 Collapsible Batons that I bought when I was a Security Officer. I got the permit and carried them for years. Now that I am retired, I will not get rid of them. I payed good money for them and sense my permit never expired. Everything must be still good.

I have a friend that was in an OIS. He did not have his baton on him because he says it is useless. They made a big issue out of the fact he had did not have it there fore he did not have that less lethal option. It was a clean shoot and he ended up being fine but he carries it now so he can say he had the option but it was not the right one.

CA is cool with me carrying up to 3 loaded handguns on myself at the same time, but they're terrified at the thought of me having a baton.
Settle down, folks. The new "ghost gun" regulations probably don't do what you think they do.

If a cane is good to go, how about valaska or shepherds axe? Legal? It is used as a cane/walking stick as well as a utility axe.

It could be considered a "leaded cane"; which is illegal (felony) to import, make, transfer, or possess in CA.
^It depends on how much the CA LEO that encounters it, wants to jam you up for it.

How would one charge that as a leaded cane?

I can see other charges for wandering with an axe, machete, ho etc.

I knew a guy years ago who got arrested, charged, AND convicted of carrying a baton, for having a simple wooden dowel laying on his backseat. It was for propping up the hood on his junker car that didn't have a proper hood prop. But he was on probation, and the officer was uncomfortable with him having something within his reach that even remotely resembled a baton, so off to jail he went - arrested and charged only for the "baton", nothing else.

So be careful, because it's not just about the object itself, it's also about the circumstances, how you use it, and honestly, whether the officer and DA like you or not.

"leaded cane" = any cane that is weighted/strengthed with metal so that it can be used for striking.
