safe affidavit needed to pick up handgun?

I heard some gun stores like RIVER CITY GUN EXCHANGE in Sacramento require a handgun buyer to buy a $10 Ca approved lock to take possession of a handgun?

some people say you can sign something called a safe affidavit with the safe model number and brand name / make

to avoid having to buy a lock? would the buyer need to fill out something and sign it the day you pick up the gun

or do they need to bring a signed printout from home?

The FFL should have it on file. You fill it out when you p/u things.

Last time I DROS'ed a used firearm the FFL had me sign an affidavit that I have a DoJ-approved safe (on the first visit, not the pickup). I had to pull out my old email to get the manufacturer and model number, and fortunately I was able to do that just in time. Be sure you have the info at hand when you DROS.

I do not believe that the safe affidavit fulfills the federal requirement for a lock with a handgun sale/transfer. I may be wrong on that though.

You can just get a free lock with receipt from local PD.

Some manufacturers supply a lock with new firearms. At least a couple of years ago if you showed up with a lock and a receipt for its recent purchase, that is all you needed. Check how recent it need be. That keeps the dealer from overcharging you for the lock.

The safe affadavit satisfies the California requirement for an approved lock purchased within the past 15 days (proof required). For handguns there is a federal requirement for a lock that is not satisfied by a safe affadavit. However, the federal requirement is satisfied by any lock.

Turner's has done that for years. Another reason I don't buy firearms from them. Better shops will give you the lock for $5 and offer to buy it back later if you return it.

Even if you bring in a brand new sealed trigger lock Turner's won't accept that and will make you buy one of theirs.

                  30 days, but right.

Keep the model number of the safe on piece of paper in your wallet. If you fudge by guessing the model number while DROS'ing or picking up the gun, it may be used against you at some future date. Unlikely that it will, but using the correct model number is best.
