I have two Sten guns. One a MKIII and the other a MKII. Theyare both semi auto and legal in CA.

I'd like to take the MKII and cover the longer barrel (that is required to be put on to make it legal in CA) with just a light tube. It would "look" like a suppressor (which came on some MKII). It would not be a functioning suppressor. It would only be a cover to cover over the long barrel required to make it legal. I hate the long barrel sticking out.

If you were mount an imitation suppressor, you'd be giving a LEO sufficient probable cause to arrest you for PC 33410. That's a felony. I wouldn't go there.

Also please keep in mind that California's definition of a "Silencer" (California law doesn't use the more-correct term "suppressor" in the statute) includes an object that "diminishes" the report of a firearm. If your imitation suppressor, even very minimally, reduces that report, then you could still be charged.

Moreover, I was wondering what keeps you from stuffing sound absorbing material into the tube that is only meant, you say, to hide the ugly long barrel?

To avoid any potential conflicts, if I were doing it I would make sure to leave a portion of the muzzle exposed. I think doing so would make anything you do resemble more of a handguard, than a suppressor. Hopefully avoiding potential conflict over having a suppressor looking attachment.

I understand the look your going for, but a giving up a bit of that look sure beats endless questions, from John Q Public at the range who thinks he knows all. Or even worse the one who calls the local LE reporting you have a silencer on your machine gun.
