    Colt LE6920CMP-B Registration Question

I purchased a Colt LE6920CMP-B from Turners in March of 2013.

In researching a different topic, I ran across the following FAQ on OAG website:

Assault Weapons and .50 BMG Quick Links to Topics General FAQs “Other” Assault Weapons Military Assault Weapons Bullet Button Assault Weapons General FAQs What is considered an assault weapon under California law? What are AK and AR-15 series weapons? What is considered a .50 BMG rifle under California law? Can assault weapons and .50 BMG rifles still be registered? I already paid the Dealer's Record of Sale (DROS) fee and went through a DOJ record check when I purchased the firearm. Does that satisfy the registration requirement?

I already paid the Dealer's Record of Sale (DROS) fee and went through a DOJ record check when I purchased the firearm. Does that satisfy the registration requirement?

No. The DROS fee only covers the cost to determine whether or not a purchaser is prohibited from purchasing or possessing a firearm at the time of the transaction. Additionally, prior to January 1, 2014, rifle or shotgun purchaser information could not be retained by DOJ.
Based on this PDF, it looks like my weapon needed to be registered--unless my model is/was exempt at the time.

My thinking is that Turners would have taken care of all the paperwork, including registering it if necessary, or at least informed me that I may need to register it. However, I don't recall this ever being discussed.

Am I correct in that this weapon would have needed to be registered at the time of purchase?

If so, does Turners normally handle this for their customers?

If the registration requirement went into effect after I purchased it, I assume it still needs to be registered. Is this still possible?

I bought this because I was looking into getting into 3-gun competitions. But ammo got too expensive and, for a while at least, tough to come by, so I just more or less stopped shooting and hadn't kept up on things.

I haven't even fired the thing.

Okay. It appears, I did not have to register the specific model at the time of purchase, but, as of Jan 1, 2017, I do now.

I have one year to do so as indicated by the following:

    AB 1135 (Stats. 2016, ch. 40) and SB 880 (Stats. 2016, ch. 48) - Assault Weapons
Please let me know if I am mistaken.

P.S. I checked and it looks like online registration is still not available.

Assault weapons registration is a different process than normal registration.

During the CA Dealer Record Of Sale (DROS) process the firearm is "registered" to the person acquiring the firearm.
This started for handguns on 08-07-1924.
This started for long guns on 01-01-2014.

Firearms that are "registered" during the DROS process are not automatically registered as assault weapons.
It's a different system with a different process.

Under CA laws that were passed last year...
      1. The 2017 assault weapons registration window will not open until CA DOJ finalizes the regulations governing the changes to CA assault weapons.
      2. The 2017 assault weapons registration window must close before 01-01-2018.
      3. There is no mandatory date, in which the 2017 assault weapons registration window must open by.

        Nope.
Long gun registration was not in affect when you acquired your rifle.
It is not registered to anyone in CLETS-AFS.

        For assault weapons registration, nope.
No CA FFL dealer automatically registers a firearm as an assault weapon.
That is the responsiblity of the owner.

Long gun registration is not mandatory. (it is legal to own an unregistered firearm that is not a prohibited weapon)

Since you acquired your "bullet button" equipped semi-auto centerfire rifle before 01-01-2017, it is eligible to be registered as an assault weapon during the 2017 assault weapons registration window.
You have until 12-31-2017, to either register is as an assault weapon or modify it so that it no longer meets the defintion of an assault weapon (once modified, there is no requirement to register it).

Convert the rifle to featureless and you're done. Nothing else required.

Once made into a featureless rifle, that rifle may never be returned to its original configuration in Calif.

Once assault weapon is registered as an AW, it can still be made into a featureless rifle, then unregistered with DOJ.

              Are these two sentences accurate?..

                1. It can not be made into a configuration that would classify it as a prohibited weapon (assault weapon, MG, SBR, etc).

A featureless semi-auto centerfire rifle can legally be made into a fixed magazine semi-auto centerfire rifle and vice-versa.

                2. A RAW can be de-registered.
This process is currently being reviewed/re-done by CA DOJ BOF.
New process may have more steps then what was previously allowed/accepted.
