Are long guns purchased before 2014 a mystery to the CA DOJ? I looked at a couple of my older 4473s and they mostly say long gun.

In this scenario, what action would the CA DOJ or the county prosecutor take to derive the information necessary to identify what type of firearm was associated with a DROS where the firearm type was that generic?

Pre-2014 long gun purchases that ran through DROS are known only as 'long gun'.

If there were some question associated with law enforcement, I suspect they would get a warrant and come look.

A 4473 will have the make model and SN of the gun no matter when it was filled out. It is a FEDERAL LAW. You might be confusing the Federal form "4473" with the CA state Dealer Record Of Sale form that changed in 2014.
