    New Laws question

    Hi Guys,

So i jsut purchased my first AR this week. Starting 2017 what are my choices? Can I keep it the way it is with BB or it has to go featureless? Also if i wanna keep it as is and have to register it as assault weapon, what's the down side to that. I'm asking because i was going to buy another AR, now im not sure if it's even worth it.

    Thanks for any help

    Starting 01-01-2017...
You must do one of the following options with your semi-auto centerfire AR style rifle with "bullet button" style maglock:
    (a) Register it as an assault weapon.
    (b) Modify it so that it is no longer considered an assault weapon by making it into a:
    (b1) rimfire rifle.
    (b2) manually operated centerfire rifle.
(b3) semi-auto centerfire rifle without any prohibited features.
(b4) semi-auto centerfire rifle with a fixed 10 round magazine, which can not be removed without disassembling the firearm's action.
    (c) Sell it to a CA FFL dealer with an assault weapons permit.
    (d) Take it out-of-state for storage or to sell through an out-of-state FFL dealer.
    (e) Surrender it to law enforcement for destruction.

    Conditions for owning a RAW:
    (1) RAW can only be legally possessed in authorized locations*.
    (2) RAW must be transported directly to and from those authorized locations*.
    (3) RAW must always be transported unloaded and in a locked container.
    (4) RAW can not be possessed by a person under the age of 18.
    (5) RAW can only be legally possessed by another person when the registered owner is present and this occurs at a target range.

    *Authorized locations:
    (A) The registered owner's private property.
    (B) Another person's private property with written permission to possess the RAW on the property.
    (C) At a target range.
    (D) At a Fish & Game licensed shooting club.
    (E) At a law enforcement sponsored/approved educational event.
    (F) On public land with authorization to have a RAW by the Gov agency responsible for maintaining that part of public land.

          Other issues that bother me.

You can't sell your RAW in State.
You can't gift it to your kids.
Your kids can't inherit the RAW.
If your RAW needs repairs you must transport it in a locked container
And wait while the FFL fixes it. You cannot leave it with him overnight.
All RAWs have destination requirements. For example, directly to the approved
Range and back. No side trips...

If shipping out of State it must be shipped by an FFL with an Assault Weapons Permit. I have shipped a couple out of State and FFLs with this permit are RARE.
We have to assume more FFLs will be approved in the future. (Yeah....right)

I expect PLENTY of good, law abiding folks to have issues with over zealous Police and District Attorney's in the coming year (s). People will become Criminals by paper legislation and victims of this ridiculous new law.

Just like a few years ago when People were ARRESTED for legal possession of
an Off List Lower Rifle. Their gun was confiscated, their car was towed, they were arrested for a FELONY, handcuffed, booked into Jail and if they could make bail, they did. Otherwise you sat in County Lockup. These young District Attorney's who wanted to make their BONES and Scorecard look good overcharged based on lack of knowledge. Some people lost jobs, had to spend money they didn't have to get the Charges Dropped. Others went to Trial and
Won. The man who got arrested for the Hammerhead Grip and went to trial got the CDOJ Employee to admit on the stand that that grip is not considered a pistol grip; hence it is featureless. But it cost time and money to fight these sort of unfair malicious Arrests. And it's always a nice guy who contributes to society
never a gang member who ignores all the laws anyway.....

Fewer people are killed with all rifles each year (323 in 2011) than with shotguns (356), hammers and clubs (496), and hands and feet (728).

            First....welcome to Cal Guns...

Keep that new AR. Just plan to convert it to a featureless Rifle and without a
Bullet Button (not required on featureless) drop those 10 round mags with your
            Finger...

            Just my opinion.

            Be well

If OP intends to avoid registration by going featureless, the new laws beginning Jan 1st do not apply. Thus there isnt really a rush to get a featureless AR before the end of the year.

There will probably be many new featureless designs in the coming years as well.

That loophole should be closed if not in this session, by the next.

You mean a complete ban on and registration of all semi-auto longuns with DBMs? That would include the M1A, M1 carbine, Mini14. Its probably coming in the next couple of years but not Jan 1st.
