CA Firearm safety handbook says firearms at home should be stored separately from ammunition/magazines. It also says you can have it loaded at home....

What's the consensus?

A gun without ammo and a magazine is useless. I store in a safe with a loaded mag, but I don't chamber a round until I believe there is a need for it.

If there are children in the home they should be locked in a safe. So loaded or not, is a non issue.

I agree from usability point of view. But how about legality?

That is a safety recommendation not law. The only law about storage is if there are children in the home. Of course common sense and thieves means you should have a safe, of some type.

A.1) Handgun is in the safe with the magazine and chambered (c&l)
A.2) Handgun is in the safe with magazine inserted, but not chambered
A.3) Handgun is in the safe, magazine with rounds is in the safe but not inserted in the gun.
A.4) Handgun is in the safe, magazine unloaded. There's also ammunition in the safe.
A.5) Handgun is in the safe, ammunition is in another safe.

B) All the same provisions, but homeowner is at home.

They are all legal. There are no state laws that dictate how a gun must be stored in regard to loaded or unloaded. The only state law regarding storage is when children are in the home they can not have access to it.

IIRC if it's locked in a proper case the mags may be in the same case as long as they are not inserted into the magwell and no rounds as chambered.

Mine are in quick-access lockboxes. Safe from children but readily available & fully loaded.

People who have common sense don't need a law.
