TLDR - When buying lowers a) make sure you have a gun safe meeting the appropriate characteristics or a CA DOJ Certified Lock Box, and b) fill out the affidavit form properly.
This is just a heads-up for those of you buying AR/AK lowers, who are newer to this forum, or who have may not purchased a lower before.
In CA, every gun sold has to come with a gun lock, or, if it is being sold without a gun lock, the purchaser must affirm that he or she has a gun safe meeting certain characteristics, or that he or she has a CA DOJ approved lock box.
BE CAREFUL FILLING OUT THIS FORM, AND READ IT FIRST.
When I was purchasing lowers earlier this week, the guy handed it to me, and said, fill out your safe make and model here on the top line, check these two boxes, and sign and date here.
So I did. Then before I handed it back to him, I looked at it, just to make sure I wasn't signing anything under penalty of perjury that wasn't true. Upon rereading it, I wasn't sure my gun safe was UL certified, and wasn't sure it met all the characteristics. Then I read it further, and I wasn't sure what I had was a gun safe, but was instead a lock box.
So then I had to ask him for a fresh copy, and filled out the BOTTOM portion, which discusses DOJ Certified Lock Boxes. Luckily the lock box I had purchased met the CA DOJ certifications, and was on their approved list.
You can see the roster of approved devices here - http://safetydevice.doj.ca.gov/dsearch2.asp
Anyway, I'm always a bit fussy about trying to obey the laws and avoiding committing perjury, especially when it comes to firearms, so I thought some of you might appreciate the heads-up as well.
