80% is a paper weight, completed lower is a firearm. Which one is it?

In this really obvious case of found property, it should be turned into the police.

I saw the penal codes related to this somewhere recently. It is illegal to keep any found property worth more than $100. If the found property is a firearm (a completed 80% lower is a firearm) it is a felony to keep it regardless of the value.

The only result of threads like this are that they go nowhere, and result in a lot of overthinking something silly that seldom ever happens, if ever. If you are into hypothetical musings, so be it, but it is really a waste of time.

                +1
This penal codes at issue were discussed in the "son found two guns in an estate sale home" thread.
keeping "found" firearms is specifically addressed, and it would be unlawful if it occurred as described in your scenario.

This is correct but a call to the police is the better procedure. For all anybody knows, it could have been used in a crime and where it is at may be important.

Ya, but I read this as: "I'd really like to buy my friends AR, what happens when I do it?"

Answer is, you will have to lie about doing it yourself, because it is illegal, even in the fake situation you imaging you would tell the cops if you get caught.

This is the correct legal answer to this hypothetical question.

So if I set up a box of Standard Capacity magazines on a board resting on a rock like a teeter-totter and I unintentionally dropped a big rock on the other end of the board (think of Wiley Coyote dropping a rock from the top of a cliff) and all the magazines went flying across the State line into California. And then later I felt like going for a nice walk and stumbled over this cool pile of magazines just lying there in the desert, could I legally take them home with me?
