Text of the law:

(b) Any person who possesses a firearm in a place that the person knows, or reasonably should know, is a school zone, as defined in paragraph (1) of subdivision (e), unless it is with the written permission of the school district superintendent, his or her designee, or equivalent school authoritythe grounds of, a public or private school providing instruction in kindergarten or grades 1 to 12, inclusive, or within a distance of 1,000 feet from the grounds of the public or private school.

Not just any person at the school can sign the waiver (see section b). Your explanation states it is off "school grounds," but this is not clearly defined anywhere. Given your explanation of the area, I would say its fairly unlikely, but without a clear definition or otherwise you will always be taking "some" risk.

Seems that this is much more clear and much more to worry about.
And excessive...1,000 feet away is at least several blocks in my area.

Does this prohibit off-duty police as well?

This article says that on-duty police are exempt and "others specifically authorized to assist in an emergency."

I know this might seem like a dumb question but it wouldn't be the first time the government has passed a law that prevented itself from doing something.

Yes, I fully understand the 1000 foot exemption. I have no plans nor need to drive in front of the school or go onto the property itself.

I am concerned about the shared parking lot. Unlike a curb or sidewalk the school border is not clearly defined.

Driving on the street in front of the school is still legit, right?
