    Beretta 92G

I don't know if this is the right board for this question, but here it goes.

I am planning on getting a Beretta 92G (the decocker only version of the 92FS) for my birthday next month through my mom (since I'm only turning 20).

I checked the roster and saw the 92G on there but I just checked again and it specifies only the 92G Elite A1 and the 92G Elite II (and the 92G-SD, but that is way out of my price range). Is the 92G available for purchase in California? I know the 92FS is, but am I out of luck?

Side Note: I think I could buy a decocker slide on eBay or something and slap that on there to get the same effect. Would that be legal? It's just changing out a part that isn't serialized.

    Thanks!

Sounds like you are setting up your mother to be a straw buyer.

How so? I thought you just had to be 21 to purchase handguns, not own them.

When I say "through my mom" I just mean she'll buy it at the gun store, then transfer it to me.

If something is misunderstood let me know.

          OP,

It's a Birthday gift from mom.

Say no more. It's good to go.

Alright, now I know the error in my ways.

My mom is going to buy a handgun for my birthday which she will then transfer to me. This will be a gift that she is getting entirely with her own money to then give to me.

Past that, just to be clear, do I have to be 21 for her to do the inter-familiar transfer with a handgun?

And back to the original question, can I buy a standard Beretta 92G in California? Edit: Looks like the standard 92G is a no go, I'll have to be gifted a 92FS then buy the G slide later on.

Thank you for the information! Committing felonies is not on my to-do list.

Yes, your mother can gift a pistol to you.

Just like members here made some ASSUMPTIONS, prepare for the possibility at the gun store, they may assume the same, and refuse to sell to your mother.

Be prepared to have problems buying ammo for it since you are not 21.

You can buy a 92FS <10 day wait> and either buy 92G slide or have a 92 slide modified. It's not an eBay thing. Who ever told you that was mistaken. There is one shop that I know of who can do the conversion.

Personally I dislike the 'G' but it's up to you. Have you tried both?

I have no opinion that is useful about you or mama buying a gun for a 20 year old.

To get a decocker only beretta, you have 4 options:
                  1) You can send it an FS slide to wilson combat to to be converted to "G" specification. $150 for the work on a ~3 month lead time. As far as I know, they're just shipping the slides off to AlleghenyGunWorks, so you might be able to save some time by sending to AGW directly.
                  2) You can look for a 92G Elite IA/Elite II on the used market -- they tend to run in the 800-1000 price range.
                  3) An Elite I, IA, II , 92G,92G Brigadier, etc. slides will all drop on to a 92fs frame with no problems, and you can probably find one of those in the 250-400 region. Keep an eye out at beretta forum classifieds
                  4) Buy a new 92G-SD. $1200-1500

                    You have not mentioned ...

Apparently you live in CA, since you posted here.

Does your mother live in CA? If yes, then she can buy it, give it as a gift, and you file the OPLAW form; all done.

If no, then it doesn't work; interstate transfer must run through a CA FFL, and while the transfer is still roster-exempt, it is not exempt from 21-and-older for handguns.

To BKinzey, I'll be careful. If my mom is willing to buy a gun as a gift for my birthday I'm sure she'll be fine with buying me ammunition.

To Orangeusa, I've seen the slides on eBay before.
I have shot the FS before and loved it, so it isn't too big for my hands. I haven't tried the G. I now know I'll have to start with an FS anyway, so if I love the FS and don't want to change it, I won't.

To Librarian, yep we both live in California. In the same house, even. So no problems there.
This is a little off topic, but I'm looking at the OPLAW form right now. In the "Owner Information" section, am I putting my information there or my mother's? I imagine it would be mine since the gun is already in her name.

Thank you everyone for the informative responses!

Yes, you put your info there, not hers. You'll need to have an HSC or FSC before she can transfer the handgun to you.

Yeah I have my FSC already since I've purchased a gun (Swiss K31) since the beginning of this year.

                          Thank you!
