Rifle from St. Louis to Ojai

    Hi,

My father in law wants to give me his Springfield .308 rifle. My in-laws live in St. Louis MO and we live in Ojai, CA.

The rifle has been modified with a different stock and a scope was added.

What is the best way to bring this gun legally into CA?
We happen to visit them over 4th of July so if we need to do something in person in St. Louis before shipping the rifle we can take care of that.

    Looking forward to your advice!

What alabamacoastie is proposing you do is illegal, and also happens to be a violation of this boards rules.

Federal laws require that a transfer between 2 unlicensed individuals of different states go thru an FFL. The easiest way to do what you want to do is find an FFL close to you that is willing to accept the rifle from a non-FFL (your FIL). Once your FFL receives it, you do the normal DROS, 10 day wait, etc. Your FFL is free to charge whatever he wants for the transfer plus the DROS fee, so shop around for the best price. Not sure what it is near you, but in the LA/OC area I've seen it as low as $50 including DROS to $125 plus DROS.

If your FIL doesn't want to ship it personally, he should be able to find an FFL near him that will help him out for a nominal fee.

It may be the case that the different stock is an issue.

      This is an M1A, yes?

The 'vanilla' M1A, 'straight stock', is OK. But adding a pistol-grip stock may require a 'magazine locking device' (aka 'bullet button').

You also may need to replace the 'flash hider' with a CA 'muzzle brake' - Springfield has the part - BEFORE the gun gets to CA. (If you put a 'bullet button' on it, a hider would be OK)

And of course, no mags greater than 10 rounds.

Thanks for the advice, I asked at 2 different gun stores in my area and both told me it would be next to impossible.
I Guess I will have to ask an other store who might be better informed.

My FIL used the rifle for hunting and did not add a pistol grip or large magazine to it.

Will aks him about the flash suppressor.

        Smiles across the wires,

        Roger

Must put a ca legal muzzlebrake on it and ship to ffl here with max 10 round magazine. Do dros here at ffl. Set it up with ffl before it is shipped. Father in law does not qualify for any intrafamilial transfer so don't try that. He could gift it to his daughter your wife but that is not to be posted on here.

Try EBR Works in Thousand Oaks, Fort Courage in Simi or Addax Tactical in San Fernando. As long as the gun is legal in CA, they should all be able to help you.

If you're going to visit box it up for him and have him ship it to your FFL. The Post Office is probably cheapest. You can use the PO for long guns.

Thanks, that would be the most appropriate thing to do.
Him explaining and handing me over his rifle in person. Its a very personal gift that I want to accept and thank him for in person.

On an other note, he also told me that he has a couple hundred rounds of ammo for me. Can that be shipped as well?
