    Crime Statistics FFLs vs Pharmacies

I thought this would be interesting to share...especially when it comes to evaluating impact of a type of store on crime. To highlight the important statistics I put quote boxes around them.

    First I’ll define the crimes

Robbery - theft using force or threatening use of force

Burglary - theft involving illegal entry into a building

    Larceny - basic theft(think shoplifting)

    FFLs 2012 crime totals

    Robberies

There were a total of 12 reported robberies in 2012 among FFLs in the 50 states

    Burglaries

There were a total of 377 reported burglaries in 2012 among FFLs in the 50 states

    Larcenies

There were a total of 662 reported larcenies in 2012 among FFLs in the 50 states

    Pharmacies 2012 crime totals

    Robberies

There were a total of 731 reported armed robberies in 2012 among pharmacies in the 50 states

    Burglaries

There were a total of 516 reported burglaries in 2012 among pharmacies in the 50 states

    Larcenies

There were a total of 1017 reported larcenies in 2012 among pharmacies in the 50 states

Just looking at the raw data pharmacies are

61 times more likely than a gun dealer to be the victim of an armed robbery

1.37 times more likely than a gun dealer to be the victim of a burglary

1.54 times more likely than a gun dealer to be the victim of larceny
So which retail stores are more likely to cause crime and should be subject to excessive zoning restrictions, excessive storage restrictions and other ‘anti-crime’ measures?

Oddly it’s MUCH harder to find the crime statistics for pharmacies but it shouldn’t be. Both FFLs and pharmacies have to keep detail records of guns and drugs stolen and report them to the appropriate public agency. The ATF publishes the FFL crime data readily, the DEA…..not so much.

    Data Sources….

That is only because the crooks have figured out, lead pills aren't as good as the ones at the drug store. OP, thank you for the interesting stats.

There are over 66,000 pharmacies in the US. And a pharmacy is an open, public business establishment. An FFL can simply be a licensed individual. There are over 650,000 individual pharmacists in the US.

Actually in that you are correct I pulled the wrong number and what I got what the number of 'retail' pharmacies an oversight in this case because I just looked at the wrong number in the table. The total pharmacy count is 67,000 or roughly a 1-1 relationship instead of 2-1 but note I didn't count all the FFLs, I just counted the 01/07, i.e. the dealers, gunsmiths, C&R, etc which could have firearms stolen in burglaries etc were not counted. The theft statistics for FFLs include all FFLs it doesn't break down which are 07/01. For the record there are 130,000 or so licensed FFLs of all types.

BTW why do you feel the number of 'pharmacists' is relevant? Are they all dispensing/storing drugs at home, which can then be stolen? Or are all the drugs kept actually at the pharmacy? The point with this is that each FFL represents a licensed location where firearms are kept and stolen from.

It's also very likely that the FFL burglary statistics will be heavily represented by home based FFLs not those with retail storefront. But since the data does not differentiate that wasn't stated.
