DC Gun Ban Vote on C-SPAN this AM (9/17), after 1 min. speeches

A huge pro-gun amendment to the House Bill will be voted on today, right after 1 minute speeches. The bill WAS authored by anti-gunners (Henry Waxman and Eleanor Holmes Norton!!!) but is expected to be taken over by pro-gun Democrats who filed a "discharge petition" to force the bill out of committee and effect these changes. (BIG KUDOS TO REP. CHILDRES, D-MISSISSIPPI - A Dem freshman - for authoring this amendment!)

The pro-gun amendment legalizes semi-automatic rifles *AND PISTOLS* (still classified as "assault weapons"), does away with DC's registration system and allows DC residents to buy guns in neighboring states.

They were in session until after midnight last night holding the debate. See

Was a real knock-down dragout. Eleanor Holmes Norton was absolutely RABID, so it looks like had the votes last night :-)

Final pro-gun amendment vote total: 260 YES, 160 NO

Will now be additional debate on other amendments and a vote on final bill passage. Bet it passes. :-)

Probably 80% of callers are agreeing with the pro-gun changes - including Democrats.

Final bill vote total: 266 YES, 152 NO

    Historic!

    C-SPAN online
False is the idea of utility that sacrifices a thousand real advantages for one imaginary or trifling inconvenience; that would take fire from men because it burns, and water because one may drown in it; that has no remedy for evils except destruction. The laws that forbid the carrying of arms are laws of such a nature. They disarm only those who are neither inclined nor determined to commit crimes.

I bet this is just a move to make Democrat gun owners trust them more. Then once they have control of the White House and congress they will just put through all the gun bans they can.

No, this is a move to preempt a court case against D.C. that would have far wider reaching consequences across 50 states than does a simple law passed by Congress to head off the possibility of such a lawsuit.

Cynical much? I still don't trust the Dems at all when it comes to gun rights (or pretty much anything else), but I can still be glad when a few of them do support us.

They don't, not those ones, anyway. Read the previous poster.

Why does our legislature have to create a bill giving us rights that is already in the constitution and that the SCOTUS has already affirmed?

The DOJ should be indicting every single person on the DC council who goes against the SCOTUS decision.

It's questionable whether or not this bill will pass through the Senate. The other question then becomes how will the Heller II case adapts (as the DC Council changed the laws again). Will they amend their complaint with the new restrictions in mind or will they drop the lawsuit and refile? I'm sure Heller might go after the DC Pistol carry license law this time around.

Info on who voted which way...

                      can be found here:

Surprise, Democrat Jerry McNerney voted YES. Mike Honda and Pete Stark voted No.

Guess I should have let Mr. Honda know that I wanted a YES vote on this bill. After I asked him to work to change or stop HR 1022, he became a cosponsor.

No, this is a whole fleet of Democrats running as fast as they can away from their own party's platform as fast as they can just to assure that, as individuals, they stay electable.
