Old Sacramento bans guns during "Old Sacramento days" over the weekend

So Sacramento has an "Old Sacramento" and once a year they do this "Old Sacramento days" thing where they bring in a bunch of dirt and cover the streets with it and then these actors dress up and they have fake shoot outs and what not like the old west. I usually stay away from Old Sacramento and downtown in general as a rule but a friend was going to Old Sac and needed a ride so me and my wife walked around Old Sac. Anyway I notice these big signs all over the street,

Seems ironic to me that to reenact the old west you need to take away people's gun rights when everyone carried a gun in those days freely. It also occured to me that this didn't seem legal since open carry is legal in Sacramento. I just about went home grabbed a holster and Glock from the safe and came back to open carry in spite of the sign but my wife wouldn't have it. Please if I'm wrong let me know but I had to take a picture and post about this. I was pissed off after reading the sign and I can see this is the future as I was probably the only one to question the sign....Pretty sad.

Old Sacramento is a State Historic Park, not a public street or public right-of-way.
California State Parks can set whatever rules they want. Unfortunately they've banned firearms in quite a few state parks.

Don't think it would restrict a CCW holder.

Actually, it would. See the fight ongoing right now about CCW in National Parks.
Property owners (including the gov't) can restrict your right to carry on their property even with a CCW. There ARE some exemptions for CCW & LEO for certain things (schools for example).

I think part of the concern might be that with so many guns there loaded with blanks, or even replica-type guns incapable of firing real bullets, that someone might pick up the wrong gun, or some goof-ball might grab a gun out of a holster and say "hey watch this!" and then tragedy ensues because the person legitimately thought it wouldn't go bang and if it did it would just be a blank because we're re-enacters here, right?! and nobody's got live rounds in their guns, right?!

You would think people would have more sense, and even moreso when the gun doesn't resemble a "cowboy gun" but folks who are not into guns seldom draw these kinds of distinctions. Confession: before I was into guns I thought all revolvers were "cowboy guns" and thought it was ridiculous that S&W had a nuclear atom symbol on their revolvers - what, atom age cowboys? Made me do a flashback to Dr. Strangelove for a second. Now of course I know better, but unfortunately the bar gets lowered to accomodate the most ignorant and careless among us, not the other way around.

I'm not justifying it, just trying to come up with a plausible explanation...

AS A REENACTOR, safety is of a major concern.

It's best to keep all LIVE AMMO away from the reenactment. Since old sac is basically a park, and they're having a reenactment, that sign there is a sure way to keep law abiding people from bringing live ammo into the area.

If Ca ever becomes a shall issue state, it doesn't mean you can carry every where. If a restaurant, sporting event etc. has signs posted. You must obey the request of the posted sign or risk loosing your CCW. ( if caught ) You don't see it often in AZ but the local Costco has a sign at the entrance..so now I don't go there. Same with gun shops or sporting stores..but like I said, Its not often you see them.

Well if you take that sign literally it means even cops and park rangers don't get to carry a gun unless they are part of the show.

That would be funny to point that out to one of them.. just for fun of course. Ask them to go put their pistol in the trunk of their car please.

Really now are you speaking first hand here? Bring your shovel as you are digging a hole for yourself. It called trespass, California has very few restrictions for CCW. You ever herd of "pack-don't-tell," gang bangers are better armed than you think. I know of a mall near work that has one of the signs, "no weapons," all I risk is "trespassing" and if I have to save your sorry azz, you thanks me latter. All WalMart's had these signs for a while, where are the signs now? Gone, they got sued because of a few altercations in the parking lots because of the stupid restrictions. Lose a CCW for trespassing? Not likely.

Next year walk into Evangeline's and buy one of those little plastic badges.

                              Problem solved.
