    Gun Control at work . . .

D.C. Police to Check Drivers In Violence-Plagued Trinidad

    By Allison Klein
    Washington Post Staff Writer
    Thursday, June 5, 2008; A01

D.C. Police Chief Cathy L. Lanier announced a military-style checkpoint yesterday to stop cars this weekend in a Northeast Washington neighborhood inundated by gun violence, saying it will help keep criminals out of the area.

Starting on Saturday, officers will check drivers' identification and ask whether they have a "legitimate purpose" to be in the Trinidad area, such as going to a doctor or church or visiting friends or relatives. If not, the drivers will be turned away.

Wait! What, can they legally do this?
I'm not sure this can be enforced as we the people have the right to move around freely in our country, don't we?

I always find it interesting to read the comments on places like Digg (this issue showed up there this morning) in order to get a different perspective.

I highly encourage everyone to sign up for one of those sites and help stem the tide of the antis that hang out in these online places. We must go on the offensive and provide good, reasonable reasons to the discussions. This will highlight the FUD the antis spill and maybe start getting non-gun owning people to reconsider their position.

We need the support of the non-gun owner to be successful. Right now all they hear is about how bad guns are.

So, even if you don't sign up, at least take a look at some of the comments on Digg, etc. You will be amazed.........

The right to travel is a part of the "liberty" of which the citizen cannot be deprived without due process of law under the Fifth Amendment ... Freedom of movement across frontiers in either direction, and inside frontiers as well, was a part of our heritage. Travel abroad, like travel within the country, may be necessary for a livelihood. It may be as close to the heart of the individual as the choice of what he eats, or wears, or reads. Freedom of movement is basic in our scheme of values. "Our nation," wrote Chafee, "has thrived on the principle that, outside areas of plainly harmful conduct, every American is left to shape his own life as he thinks best, do what he pleases, go where he pleases."

                  -- Justice William O. Douglas, Kent v. Dulles (1958)

What they are doing in DC will not stand up in court. If this isn't a civil liberties violation, I don't know what is. This has ACLU written all over it. Unless they can show an OVERWHELMINGLY SUBSTANTIAL, IMMINENT, & DIRECT need for this action as taken, expect an injunction very very soon.

But hey, with the war on terror and all, they are just using the same tactics to insure our safety at home.

One might expect this sort of thing from the "leadership" in DC.

My question is, how many DC residents have camped out in city hall shouting "I dont think so." Or do they welcome it, beacuse it will make them "safer."

I have a real hard time taking other peoples lives more seriously than they do.
"Did I say "republic?" By God, yes, I said "republic!" Long live the glorious republic of the United States of America. Damn democracy. It is a fraudulent term used, often by ignorant persons but no less often by intellectual fakers, to describe an infamous mixture of socialism, miscegenation, graft, confiscation of property and denial of personal rights to individuals whose virtuous principles make them offensive." - Westbrook Pegler

I was thinking more along the lines of 30+ year olds that have not grown up yet.....

It is weird, because I feel like a 'troll' over there sometimes. The only benefit is that your comments can get bumped to the top, and sometimes the sensible discussions do. If it converts even one person to a better understanding of how the 2nd Amendment was created to guarantee the rest of our rights, then I feel better. The volume of people that read digg makes it attractive as well.
