First off, let me start by saying I think the ACLU is a fantastic organization. IN CONCEPT. It's wonderful that we have an organization devoted to protecting civil liberties as outlined by the constitution and beyond.
Only problem is, they protect every civil liberty but one: the right of the people to keep and bear arms.
Which brings me to my question: Has any 2nd amendment advocacy group taken any action against the ACLU? I understand there's no law suit to be had or anything, but I'm talking petitions, protests, open letters, boycotts.
This organization is great and has loads of potential for serving our citizenry. They have some fine, upstanding ideals. But needless to say I think something needs to be done about their stance--or lack thereof-- on the issue of the 2nd amendment.
If Heller is to rule in our favor, I would especially be very interested in organizing with you gentlemen to create some sort of educational campaign, something to get the ACLU to notice us.
Gun owners are a very diverse group, and I wonder if perhaps they have a very different picture: rednecks with "assault weapons" sitting on their front porches playing banjos. Couldn't be farther from the truth, we have liberals and conservatives on these boards, people of several races, people of several religions--the right to bear armaments is a liberty that people of all races, genders, creeds and classes respect.
I think it's high time someone sent the message to this organization that we are more than the sum of our parts. The liberty we advocate is no different than any other liberty outlined in the constitution: It needs to be defended, at all costs.
