        With the final vote on SB-374, a little bit of freedom died.
        SB-374 passes concurrence, as does SB-755.

        All is not lost, as we defeated SB-396 and SB-53.

        Now the intense campaign for Governor Brown to VETO all of these bills begins.

        Gavin Newsom is a lying, cheating slickster and will be is the worst mistake California has ever made if he gets now that he has been elected Governor. Hollywood movie producers look to him and his oleaginous persona as a model for the corrupt "bad guy" politician character. This guy is so greasy, he could lubricate an entire arsenal of AR-15s just by breathing on them.

          Governor Brown,
          I am writing to ask you to carefully consider the impact of as well as the motivation for the many new gun control bills that have reached or will shortly reach your desk. As stated by the legislators who authored and support these bills, their principle intent is to "close loopholes" in current laws that are being "exploited" by manufacturers. One could argue that these so called loopholes are genuinely innovative ways for law abiding manufacturers an gun owners to comply with the spirit of the law without abandoning a pastime they enjoy and their right to self defense. In that light, several of these bills appear to be, to quote your response to AB902, "more punitive than deterrent." In fact, unless the intent of these bills is in fact to disarm the public and deprive them of any free choice in the ownership of firearms, then some of these bills are truly intended only to punish those who would dare to continue to own sporting rifles that the California legislature desperately wants outlawed.

          For example, SB374 is clearly an overreach. In an attempt to outlaw AR and AK style rifles, SB374 would label virtually all centerfire semi-automatic rifles as "assault weapons". As a sometimes gun enthusiast yourself, consider the Ruger Mini 14. The Ruger Mini 14 is one of the most popular "ranch rifles" with California farmers and ranchers for the control of vermin that would destroy their crops and undermine their grazing. SB374 would label this popular and useful tool an "assault weapon", creating inappropriate burdens of cost and paperwork for these farmers and ranchers who are the bedrock of California culture.

          One more example is SB396. This bill would criminalize anyone who, in good faith and an effort to comply with California's strict gun control environment, owned a magazine with a capacity of more than 10 rounds and converted it to 10 rounds or less. SB396 would criminalize possesion of any magazine (even .22LR) that might once have been able to hold more than 10 rounds. Once again, this appears to be an attempt to punish manufacturers and gun owners who dare to manage their budget wisely by reusing materials and designs they already have in place. For instance, I own 3 10-round magazines for my Smith & Wesson M&P 15-22 .22LR. These magazines were manufactured by Smith & Wesson to comply with California law. Smith & Wesson was able to minimize the cost of these magazines by using the same molded parts used for their standard capacity magazines and permanently inserting a limiter pin to prevent inserting more than 10 rounds. They also changed the color of the follower to make it easily differentiated from the standard capacity magazine. SB396 would outlaw this magazine, leaving me with an unusable rifle and Smith & Wesson with an expensive design and development project. If this annoyance could reasonably be assumed to be accompanied by some public safety benefit, I would be willing to support it. However, I seriously doubt that any criminal would be limited by the size magazine the law allows him to have. Again, this laws appears aimed solely at making the lives of law abiding gun owners more difficult.

          I understand that some legislators believe that guns are an inherent threat to public safety. While I respectfully disagree, I am willing to make some compromises. However, I cannot accept what appears to me to be a temper tantrum on the part of a small number of legislators because people refuse to turn in all their guns while California proceeds to release thousands of violent and potentially violent criminals into our neighborhoods. Until the legislature can absolutely guarantee my safety and that of my family, their little hissy fits should not be entertained.

          I appreciate your consideration of this matter and your commitment to our great state.

          Respectfully yours,
          Excellent job, well done.

              Dianne is pretty much batsh*t insane. She needs to freekin get over what happened 30+ years ago. Using her traumatic long-gone past as an excuse to destroy gun rights would be like some Senator trying to outlaw cars because he was hurt bad in a car accident 3 decades ago.

                Gerrymandering may have some of us confused.

                Let's find our weak "constitutionalists" and support them, the vulnerable "progressives" and recall them. Can a proposition repeal California state laws ?

                  The California legislature finally put the screws to all of us. The question is will we regain our 2A rights? Maybe, it’s possible. Who knows? The media won’t work on a story. In the past three days I haven’t heard one story on the news about what’s going down. I’ve read one article in the newspaper, a week ago about the gun grab. How does the gun owning general public learn of this? I heard Wright during argument mention this too.

                    Double standard for media reporting...

                    ~~~~~~~~
                    My 2 cents: From talking to friends and relatives, I've discovered that, outside of the active gun owners, NOBODY in the state of CA seems to even know that all these anti-gun and anti-ammo bills are even being voted on. Nobody!! They certainly are almost ignored by the local papers and local TV news outlets.(which is probably JUST the way the Democrat politicians in Sacramento want it)
                    OK. Imagine for even one second, if, the Sacramento politicians had come up with a dozen new bills this session, all targeting the FIRST Amendment and free speech. One bill proposes you could only buy 1 newspaper a month. Another bill proposes that you are only allowed to watch 4 hours of television news a week. Another proposes that all your letters to the editor are screened by government experts before they can be printed. And so on. So, you think THEN the stories would be covered by the media? You're darn right they would. It'd be front page news nationwide.
                    The bottom line is, there is no respect for the 2nd Amendment from the vast majority(85%+) of journalists. They all get together and laugh and guffaw at the very notion of private gun ownership. And, they certainly are NOT going to go out of their way to print any columns that they think might help gun owners, UNLESS their editors force them to. And, the editors are poured from the same mold, so that's not likely to happen.
                    Until we reach a position in our state--and the country---that ALL of the Constitutional Amendments are EQUALLY important and equally valuable, we are going to be at this huge disadvantage.
                    Ideally, each and every one of us would make it our personal goal to befriend at least one journalist, and take them out shooting. Show them it's OK. Show them it's safe and controlled and acceptable. Show them the participants are decent and polite people.
                    We gun owners are never going to win this battle for hearts and minds by just giving each other high-fives and playing only with our kind. We need to grow the ranks. We need to turn people that are "on the fence" into our allies. We need to improve the image that others have of us. And, we need to come out from our closets, where some of us hide with our stashes and our "I got mine, now you go get yours" attitudes--and go out and show others that we are PROUD to be safe gun owners, and that we want to show others how rewarding it is to be involved in gun ownership and the shooting sports.
                    None of us live forever. We're all going to get old and die someday, and so it is our duty, while we are younger and more able, to teach the next generation the joys and benefits of gun ownership, shooting, and hunting. We will never grow the ranks of California gun ownership by being reclusive and isolated. That attitude just leads to an old man, dying alone with his guns. This is a passion that must be taught and passed down from father to son to grandson. And, don't forget the daughters and granddaughters. And siblings. And in-laws. And friends. And co-workers. And neighbors. And so on.
                    Teach your kids. Teach your grand-kids. Teach your wife. Show a friend. Take a buddy shooting; especially one that is either in the press or politics, or one that has a lot of influence. Show them a good time. Teach safety. Show your passion.
                    We are all fighting the right fight. The good fight. Don't let the other side make you feel bad for doing, what you know in your heart, is the right thing.
                      I took the liberty to add my comments to the page 1 summaries for each of the proposed laws, and sent this off to Governor Brown today. Feel free to borrow/use/modify as you wish for your own letter, email or FAX.
                      13 September 2013
                      Dear Governor Brown,
                      It has been a busy year in the California State Legislature regarding the control of firearms. I urge you to VETO all of the following bills. None of the legislation which has landed on your desk reduces crime one single iota. Most of these proposed laws will take lawful activities and turn the law-abiding into criminals. All of this legislation will certainly cost the state to administer.
                      Here is my outline of the legislation, and my reasons for asking for your VETO:
                      AB-48 (Skinner): Bans magazine rebuild kits and parts, which are already illegal to assemble in California. Personally I own standard-capacity magazines which I legally purchased well over 20 years ago…now these are contraband? Do you honestly think that the criminals will turn-in or dispose of their magazines? Why should I have to do so?
                      AB-169 (Dickinson): Bans transfer of handguns not on the "not unsafe handgun" roster. Without getting into the whole debate about safe vs. unsafe firearms, this is simply not allowing people to lawfully dispose of their property.
                      AB-170 (Bradford): Redefines "person" for Assault Weapons permits. Legal Trusts are a concept which has been applied towards firearms for many years…why is this a problem?
                      AB-180 (Bonta): Additional firearms restrictions in Oakland. Why should we fall-down the slippery slope of weakening State pre-emption of laws?
                      AB-231 (Ting): Criminal liability when child accesses firearm in your home without permission, or a prohibited person accesses firearm in your home. We already have laws which cover this subject; why do we need more? Someone breaks into my home and steals my pistol, and I am liable for their actions? Really.
                      AB-500 (Ammianno): Extends time period for background checks, secure storage requirements when living with prohibited person. NICS, the “I” stands for “Instant”, so why does the CA DOJ need 30 days to do a background check? In other states it is simply a matter of minutes to clear NICS.
                      AB-711 (Rendon): Lead ammo ban. PLEASE look at the evidence. The California Condor is declining due to other vectors for lead in the environment such as paint, fuels, etc. If there is no lead shot being used to hunt in the Condor Zone, where is the lead coming from?…certainly not from the lead from bullets 100 miles away.
                      SB-299 (DeSaulnier): Mandatory loss reporting of firearms within 7 days. Just how will this prevent any crime? If my home is burglarized, I am the victim, not the criminal.
                      SB-363 (Wright): Criminalizes storage of a handgun where the owner should have known a prohibited person would access it. Exempts Federal Law Enforcement Officers from the "not unsafe handgun" roster restrictions. Why do we continue to exempt Law Enforcement from our laws? Equal protection “under the law” should apply to all citizens, not just those who work for the government.
                      SB-374 (Steinberg): Bans all semiautomatic rifles that do not have a fixed magazine, forced registration of rifles already owned. This proposed change takes the most-common type of rifles in existence and turns them into so-called assault-weapons. People commit assault, not weapons. The registration of these newly-classified weapons will cost hundreds of millions of dollars…which is why Canada dropped their rifle registration Province by Province over the last several years. Why should I not be able to pass-on my firearms to my son when I die? This legislation will most certainly be challenged in the courts, and will not stand. How much money should the State spend on defending such a flawed plan?
                      SB-475 (Leno): Eliminates gun shows at Cow Palace. How does this make San Francisco a more safe place?
                      SB-567 (Jackson): Expands definition of shotgun to include rifled barrels and those not designed to be fired from the shoulder. What are we trying to fix here?
                      SB-683 (Block): Requires firearms safety certificate for purchasing any firearm. This will without a doubt have an impact on the ability of minorities and the less fortunate to purchase firearms. Is this the intent?
                      SB-755 (Wolk): Expands definition of prohibited persons. Expanding the definition of prohibited person does not do anything towards reducing crime; this simply removes the Second Amendment Rights of those who have two misdemeanors or even infractions. Do we really want to remove the Rights of an individual due to infractions and misdemeanors?
                      Thank you once again for your time, and for helping to support and defend the U.S. Constitution and rights of the residents of the State of California.
                      Kind regards,
                        Unconstitutional laws should not be followed, and will not be followed by many.
                          It seems like it might be necessary to redact those bills that are not going to cross Browns desk from correspondance. Keep the effort focused on what he is going to address.
                          Sometimes the law defends plunder and participates in it. Sometimes the law places the whole apparatus of judges, police, prisons and gendarmes at the service of the plunderers, and treats the victim -- when he defends himself -- as a criminal. Bastiat
                              9.99999 out of 10 of my customers have NO CLUE what is happening.
                              Every news channel reported 'drivers licenses for illegal immigrants', however none of them talked about any of the gun laws. ONE channel I saw mentioned that 'new firearms laws were passed'. It's very sad to hate the state that I love so much.
