Is everybody really fighting????

Hopefully I posted in the right section...

I can say that most of the members that are here on calguns ( and are residents) are fighting for our rights. But now I pose this question, is every gun owner you know fighting our rights as well?

I rent out a 3bd apartment with 2 other guys and all of us are gun enthusiasts. So I started a conversation about all the Ca laws and only one knew a little bit. I then asked them if they were writing letters and being active in the fight to maintain our rights. One said that he wrote a letter about about the bullet button law that didn't pass.
I then explained everything that was going on and why it is important to continue to fight as much as possible. Then I asked my dad the same thing. He's not really a avid shooter but we enjoy our once a month trip to the trap rang to dust clays. To my surprise he knew very little too. I told him that all he has to do was go online copy and paste a letter and email it. Or print it out, sign it and mail it in.

My question that I pose to all of you is are all your friends and family participating in the fight to retain or 2A rights? Have you asked them to make sure that they are active and doing their part?

This is the challenge we face. It's estimated that there are over 8 MILLION gun owners in CA. if we could get just 10% of them to write our legislators in Sacto - we probably would not be threatened by these onerous restrictions.

If we could get 20% to be active we'd own this state!

I have a group of friends that are quite involved politically. But in order to bring in others, you need to find a place or group to guide them along. My action has been done through other groups.

Calguns might be the place, but I don't think they've done much outreach to the public. They've been at the gun shows, but most of the general public don't go to gun shows. They could do a lot more at the gun shows, but it really takes coordination and a plan of attack. They basically have to OWN (be all over it) a gun show to get noticed.

Only 8-10 showed a couple weeks ago - versus no opposition - in an area with 3,000,000+ residents.


City of Sunnyvale

Only a dozen showed up versus an opposition of 5-6 in a city with 300,000+.


Los Gatos

Only a dozen showed up versus an opposition of the same compared to previous meetings of 300+.

And each time, it's usually the same faces...

To make an impact, you've got to get 1000 to show up, at least! It can be done, but it takes organization. People used Meetup in the past for this sort of thing, creating a meetup event, and got people to join in. I don't know if that exists on these forums.

No. They are not. Many will not. For some, firearms are a way of life but for many if not most gun owners, it is not. I have spoken with some gun owners that I know personally who actually support various forms of gun control. I suspect that many of these folks are simply ignorant of the laws and constitutional issues surrounding firearms and just don't care enough to educate themselves. However, there are a select few that genuinely support these measures. I know one guy who is an AR-15 owner in a free state (he has all of the evil features on his AR). He supports UBC, limits on magazine capacity and believes that we need some form of an AWB.

Don't assume that simply because someone is a firearm owner that they support 2A rights. Some folks just want to own a weapon but couldn't care less if it were taken away.

I think you hit the nail on the head smitty. I know several gunnies and I don't think they vote, let alone contact their representatives. There are 70 million gun owners in the US and 5 million members of the NRA. There should be 70 million NRA members.

A simple phone call to the reps office is very painless and only takes about 30 to 40 seconds. They may want you know your zip code but I've never had them brace me about anything. Mostly just a "thank you I'll pass on the message." Does it have effect? I don't know but from what I heard that's the way we beat the bullet button law last year, flooding their offices with phone calls.

Recently, on the local front, the San Diego City Council was considering a gun control resolution. I contacted my city council member and voiced my opposition and I heard she voted no on it. The measure did not pass. Did my call have an effect? Maybe, maybe not, but at least my voice was heard.

Bottom line is we need to call and write to our reps.

You don't see gun owners show up in a lot of places because we all have days job unlike the opposition. Thee is good reason we can spend a couple of hundred or thousands on our hobby. I write to my reps and I donate to CGF. I do what I can to fight.

In two polls HERE, where you'd think that folks are not ignorant of the laws and constitutional issues, half of those polled voted for mandatory background checks for the rest of the country...stupid enough to think that Zero would trade that for nationwide LTC.

It's worse than you can imagine.

We are active in RKBA mainly in the political venue.
By promoting NRA / GOA endorsed candidates and helping them with small financial contributions .
We always promote NRA / GOA membership as this struggle will require numbers and a much bigger choir!

Another way try to help is with candidate phone trees and mailings .

Most of the intelligent effective gun advocates I know are active readers ! Common gun culture books help us in critical thinking skills and knowledge of battles past ,present and future possibilities.

I had an idea a while back about leasing billboard space to spread the message. Its a very interesting subject with many legal issues by itself regarding regulation of the first amendment.

Anyone have any expertise on this area?

I have gone door to door speaking with EVERYONE in my 4 block neighborhood. At places where no one was home I went back at a different time and spoke with them. I made up a little packet double spaced 14pt font with map if necessary, one page to leave with them and a call to action with time and place.

Most folks have 2 working adults supporting the household leaving virtually no time to catch the news. Then its snippets of NBCABCCBSCNN, nothing local and only what the talking heads deem important.

When I actually drew their attention to the issue at hand they became excited/agitated enough to attend the City Council meeting.

I've had the gallery packed a couple times.

It takes YOU to go out and get your neighbors attention face to face.

We rented one of those huge Monitor type billboards with the changing adverts for the Friends of the NRA banquet. Cost was $200 for 1 week.

It changed adverts every 6 seconds and it rotated out with 5 other adverts for 6 seconds each 24 hours a day for 7 days.

Pretty cool and everyone sees it.

Our eyes naturally go towards movement and with the Monitor type board everyone driving by reads it both day and night.
The standard billboard is always there and we come to not seeing it.
