When and how was full auto banned in California where there grandfathered weapons or confiscations?

Machine Guns (MGs) are not banned in CA, they are heavily regulated.

    AFAIK...
1968 = The requirement to get a CA DOJ permit for a MG to legally own/possess a MG in CA.
1971 = The "good cause" requirement for issuance of a CA DOJ permit for a MG.
1990 = The only acceptable "good causes" for issuance was codified.

Only acceptable "good cause" for issuance.
    1. For use as a prop in the movie/tv industry.
    2. The making/selling/loaning to Gov/Mil/LE agencies.

Previous "good causes" were grandfathered in for the original permit holder only.

    Example...
Bob Hope was "grandfathered" in with a "good cause" of collecting.
But when he died, his Estate had to sell off his 100+ MGs because collecting is no longer a "good cause" for issuance and the Estate did not qualify for the current acceptable two "good causes" for MG permit issuance.

Supposedly, but they are as rare as unicorns in the wild.

Personally owned MG's are around. VERY few of them are registered. I heard of a Japanese aircraft mounted mg being turned in during a buyback in the bay area. You always hear of vet bring backs that have been passed down and guns of that nature. So in regards to how many machine guns are in the state, I would venture to guess are in the thousands. With only a handful being registered. Not to mention how many are possessed by the criminal element.

                As of 03-2012...
There are 28,774 (non-Gov/Mil/LE agency) legally owned MGs in CA.

1968, wasn't that during Reagan's term in office. So was it Reagan that made those changes?

                    AFAIK...
The change was a reactionary result of the Gun Control Act of 1968.

I'm surprised that I haven't seen any Calgunners post about their MGs...

The vast majority of those MGs are possessed by prop masters.

For the most part "Hollywood" is not pro-2A, since they maintain a "i can/should have it, because i'm better than you elitist attitude".
Back in the late-90s, some prop masters pushed the notion of getting an exemption to Federal laws for Post-'86 MGs for movie/tv industry use. They killed it, when other parties amended it to be a repeal of the Hughes Amendment.

There are also a few inherited MGs around that are not legal. Many years ago I ran into a guy that had a Japanese Type 11 his father had brought back from WWII. That is one weird gun.
I always cheer up immensely if an attack is particularly wounding because I think, well, if they attack one personally, it means they have not a single political argument left.

The hard core criminal element has full autos, mexican cartels, ect. Lots of full auto Mac 10s, Mac 11s, and Tec 9s floating around

Probably because they're too afraid. Heck, I don't even feel comfortable posting about my sks because of how heavily this site is monitored. Let alone someone posting about an MG.
