NRA Reaches 5 Million Active Members

Not only is Obama the best gun salesman of the last 6 years, but it appears he's also the best NRA membership recruiter ever.

At the National Rifle Association's convention in Houston, TX, NRA Executive Vice President Wayne LaPierre announced that the NRA has now grown to an |

I think there are nearly 80 million gun owners in the US. It is hard to believe that at least 10% of them are not members.

A couple of buddys of mine are gun owners. When I mention joining the NRA, the conversation shuts down. Either that or "I don't have the money....." I find it impossible to believe that people can't come up with the $35 for an annual membership. Geez, that's a about four trips to Starbucks.

It's amazing how cheap gun owners are when it comes time to kick in a few bucks to help the cause. They'll drop $500 on ammo and $100/month on Starbucks without thinking twice but they can't come up with $25/yr for the NRA.

We should get a fund for those who can't "afford" a membership. Or even offer to gift a friend a membership. As a matter of fact if and when a friend or acquaintance offers me some excuse That's exactly what I'll do is offer to pay for the membership.

I was one of those cheap ***** gun owners until Jan of this year. Then Barry sold me a lifetime membership. I have since convinced one coworker to be a lifetime member even thou he isn't a gun owner (we're working to correct that). Taught a female coworker to shoot on my Garand; she now has one on the way from CMP and is a newly minted lifetime member. Other friends are now yearly members.

Oh boy, did I buy into some sort of pyramid scheme?

agreed...i even linked them to the $300 life deal which is awesome for the included gun insurance alone. I say, if you aren't helping the cause then don't complain if more anti-gun stuff passes.

I've offered to pay membership for any of my friends. It's 5 trips to starbucks!

My friends say no... they don't want to be on some "list". I don't know what to say to that. we're on on some list. There's a thing called Visa Level III data which a) gives merchants lower "swipe fees" and b) transmits to Visa all the details on the receipt, including product codes. Everyone is switching to Level III data because did I mention the lower swipe fees? What this means is that Visa can do a quick database search to find a list of who has bought guns and ammo, including which type of gun, which caliber / brand / quantity of ammo. Product codes already identify the category of the product (firearms, ammo) so getting a list of Visa account holders who have bought guns or ammo is a very quick query. Don't worry about being on a list, you're already on one. (Don't like it? Use bitcoin.)

I paid for a gift membership and he still does not believe the value. Can't change everyone.

Should be a mandatory fee for first gun purchasers!

Wonder how difficult it would be to get gun shops to offer modest discounts for NRA members?

I signed up today at Bass Pro in Rancho Cucamonga for 25. They had NRA recruiters outside with drawings for a handgun and gunsafe included with your signup.

                          There lies the conundrum.

Happy to see membership hitting 5 million. But ....

With the current massive assault on the Second Amendment taking place,
I must admit I'm a bit puzzled why it's not double or triple that amount by now.

Adding membership at a gun shop for a new gun and new gun owner would be awesome. Adding 25 to a new gun is nothing. I got a new range bag with my sign up but ripped up the card for it so they had extra. I have enough bags.

There isn't much margin in guns, the profit is in accessories and ammo. A better idea is a mandatory to tack 1 year memberships onto the price of hard to find items like Colt AR15s.
