Hon. Feinstein's Response to my letter!

    Dear (my name):

Thank you for your letter about gun safety and the recent mass shooting in Newtown, Connecticut. I appreciate knowing your views and welcome the opportunity to respond.

As a mother and grandmother, I am horrified and incensed by the carnage caused by this senseless act of violence. I mourn the loss of the innocent victims who were killed.

Weapons of war do not belong on our streets or in our theaters, shopping malls or, most of all, our schools. I believe we need reasonable measures that protect certain hunting and sporting weapons, and get military-style weapons off our streets. When senseless mass shootings reach into our kindergartens and elementary schools, one has to question what is happening to America.

To help reduce assault weapon violence, on January 24, 2013, I introduced the Assault Weapons Ban of 2013 (S. 150). The bill would prospectively prohibit semiautomatic rifles, handguns, and shotguns that can accept a detachable magazine and have one or more military characteristics such as a pistol grip, barrel shroud, or grenade launcher. The bill prospectively prohibits large-capacity ammunition feeding devices capable of accepting more than 10 rounds. Firearms and ammunition devices, lawfully owned on the date of enactment would be protected. The future sale or transfer of assault weapons would require a background check of the purchaser or recipient. In addition, the bill would impose a safe storage requirement to keep assault weapons secure from prohibited persons, and allow existing federal grant money to be used to support voluntary buy-back programs. The bill has been referred to the Senate Judiciary Committee for consideration.

The shooting in Newtown is the latest in a string of massacres involving military-style firearms and large-capacity magazines. In January 2011, Representative Gabrielle Giffords and 18 people were shot by a gunman in the parking lot of a Tucson supermarket. The gunman fired at least 31 rounds from an extended magazine before he was restrained by brave bystanders as he attempted to reload. Six people died, including nine-year old Christina Taylor Green and Arizona District Court Chief Judge John Roll.

In July 2012, a gunman killed 12 people and injured 58 in a movie theatre in Aurora, Colorado. The gunman used a Smith & Wesson M&P15 assault-style rifle with a 100-round ammunition drum that allowed him to rapidly fire a large number of rounds before police arrived only two minutes after the first 911 call.

On December 14, 2012, a gunman shot and killed 20 students and six school officials at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut. The gunman used a Bushmaster assault-style rifle and multiple high-capacity magazines to inflict this unspeakable terror on six- and seven-year old children and school personnel..

Military-style weapons have but one purpose: kill as many people as quickly as possible. The legislation I introduced, which is supported by law enforcement, health professionals, religious groups, mayors and many others, will help keep our communities safe from assault weapon violence that has caused so much damage and grief. Once again, thank you for your engagement in this important issue. If you have any additional comments or questions, please do not hesitate to contact my Washington, D.C. office at (202) 224-3841.

    Sincerely yours,

    Dianne Feinstein
    United States Senator

NO SURPRISE HERE. I EXPECTED LESS! But just shows how low these guys are willing to stoop to try and pass their decades long agendas. What a crock.

Our 2nd Amendment mentions nothing about hunting and fishing. It was enacted in order to provide people a recourse to tyranny. It's a sad time we are in. If they are able to get anything off or added to the 2nd Amendment, where does it stop? Today the second Amendment, tomorrow it may be the 1st Amendment.

Do we need to ban spoons to mitigate the obesity epidemic? Do we ban cars to prevent death due to drunk driving? We're does it stop. Lol. These people have ZERO common sense.

Look what happened in St. Louis today...

The antis have come unhinged. My question is do these individuals know what they are doing? Is there a puppet master, or is this just how the experiment of freedom ends?

Might as well rename it for all they care. The hunting and fishing amendment. Careful they don't declare an FHB. You know a Fishing Hook Ban.

Her "job" is not to inject her opinions in legislation. I don't think her oath included any mention of protecting her opinion but I believe it did mention protecting the constitution.

there's nothing this terrorist is doing to our human rights that's honorable...

Hey I got one of those letters in Feb 15 2013
                "Dear James:

Thank you for contacting me to share your opposition to assault weapons legislation. I respect your opinion on this important issue and welcome the opportunity to provide my point of view.

Mass shootings are a serious problem in our country, and I have watched this problem get worse and worse over the 40 years I have been in public life. From the 1966 shooting rampage at the University of Texas that killed 14 people and wounded 32 others, to the Newtown massacre that killed 20 children and 6 school teachers and faculty, I have seen more and more of these killings. I have had families tell me that they no longer feel safe in a mall, in a movie theater, in their business, and in other public places, because these deadly weapons are so readily available. These assault weapons too often fall into the hands of grievance killers, juveniles, gangs, and the deranged.

I recognize that the Second Amendment provides an individual right to bear arms, but I do not believe that right is unlimited or that it precludes taking action to prevent mass shootings. Indeed, in the same Supreme Court decision that recognized the individual right to bear arms, District of Columbia v. Heller, the Court also held that this right, like other constitutional rights, is not unlimited. That is why assault weapons bans have consistently been upheld in the courts, both before and after the Heller decision. I believe regulation of these weapons is appropriate.

Once again, thank you for your letter. Although we may disagree, I appreciate hearing from you and will be mindful of your thoughts as the debate on this issue continues. If you have any additional comments or questions, please do not hesitate to contact my Washington, D.C. office at (202) 224-3841.

Thank you. Most hunters think of the black rifle as a sacrificial lamb, that if they give the antis that, they'll go away. Thank you for being smarter than that.

I like how they use "hunters" to shield their bills....when did hunters even remotely represent American Gunowners?

According to US Fish and Game, there are only 12millions of hunters in US, compared to 90+ millions Gunowners.

Even if all hunters use gun, ignoring many are trappers and bow hunters, they still represent only 13% of gunowners.

these anti-human rights terrorists are trying to define our rights to self-defense in the most simplistic way for the misinformed to follow...

should GPS and cell phones be banned as well? they were developed for military targeting and ship to ship communication.

Does this woman define semi-auto pistols as assault weapons? What about bolt action rifles? Both have been used in random spree killings. If you're going to use whether a weapon has been used in a spree killing as your criterion for banning a certain type of weapon, you would be disingenuous to not go after both those weapons as well (we know they want to). So why haven't the antis introduced a bill to ban bolt action rifles like the Remington 700 yet?

Charles Whitman killed 11 people with a bolt action Remington 700, and he had an M1 Carbine as well, a weapon that senator Feinstein defines as an "assault weapon". Do you know how many people he killed with that M1 Carbine? None!

The Remington 700 is probably the type of rifle that antis picture when they think of a "hunting weapon". It's also used by the Marines and Army for sniping/long range marksmanship, ergo, it's a weapon of war.
