Car registration required for a handgun purchase?

I was talking to my dad recently and he had bought a SIG 226 at the last orange county gun show. He said that the vendor needed his car registration to "ensure that's here the gun was really going". Is this a new law, some company policy, more of comrade attorney general's insanity, or what?

Well, you need secondary proof of residence to purchase a handgun in California. Car registration is one common form, but utility bills, lease agreements, deeds, military permanent duty station orders indicating assignment within Califfornia, or other "government-issued (city, county, special district, state, or federal) license, permit, or registration, other than a California Driver License or California Identification Card, that has a specified expiration date or period of validity" are all good as long as it lists your name and address. This has been the law since 2003.

The above does not constitute legal advice. I am not your lawyer.

      Oh, that, okay.

I guess my dad just got really pissed off at all the new unwelcome suprises after not buying a handgun in 20+ years.

Heh, yeah, I definitely shouldn't have gone there with him.

If someone in a 20 year time warp (as far as gun las are concerned), I'd hate to think of what kind of reaction I would get out of someone, let's say hypothetically, in a 220 year time warp.

I think someone from the Revolutionary period would be quite impressed with efficiency with which we can now kill people.

The Revolutionary war might have ended at Lexington were the minute men armed with AKs.
