Question about a rifle being shipped into CA

Hypothetically - if someone from another state was shipping a rifle into CA via FedEx, to a CA FFL, and FedEx lost the package info (the sticker fell off or something), then they opened the package, got the purchaser's info from the bill of sale enclosed, and shipped it to the person's home instead, how would one handle that?
Just take it in to the dealer it was supposed to go to in the first place? Keep it and do a voluntary registration?
Just been kind of curious as to how that would work.

That's an interesting one. My inclination would be to take it to the FFL it was supposed to go to and explain what happened, turn it over to them and attempt to start the DROS and 10 day wait.

No risk here IMHO, as you are attempting to comply. If the FFL wants guidance from CalDOJ, they will call them.

Keeping it and doing nothing is a bad idea.

    That's my .02.

Good point. I don't think anyone intelligent would keep it and do nothing, but keeping it and doing a voluntary registration might cross someone's mind.

Keeping the firearm would be a Federal felony. [18 USC 922(a)(3)]
Sending in a voluntary registration form would be documenting that Federal felony.

Shipping company would normally return the package to the sender.
Lost firearm packages (all info is lost) get turned over to LE for destruction or stolen.
