    My letter to Brown

    Governor Jerry Brown,

My name is Jin Kim, and I am an American citizen, not by birth, but by the choices of my legally immigrated parents who saw the freedoms and liberty of this free country. They wanted a better life for my sister and I. They left the comforts of their homeland, which I am always thankful for, and became citizens of this great country. I am also a resident of the city of Los Angeles in our great state of California.

I took up my right to bear arms when I was 25 going through the licensing process, background checks, safe handling demonstration and properly store/lock the firearm in my home. My firearm is for the purpose of defending me, and my loved ones around me. I legally take my firearm to ranges where I practice my ability to fire safely and accurately on a regular basis. I own hollow point ammunition in the case of me needing to discharge my firearm at an assailant, I don’t want my bullets don’t go through them and walls hitting innocent bystanders. Now this safety measure is going to be deemed an “assault bullet?”

These new bills proposed are simply put unconstitutional. When these bills come your way please make the logical decision and not an emotional one based off of tragedy that has struck our nation. The government can be rash, maybe because they feel that it is in the best interest of the people, but the country is made up of a democracy of we the people. You are to uphold the constitutional rights which our founding fathers created in ways to protect, we the people, from the governing bodies that may oppress us. We have every right to defend ourselves from not just one attacker, but plausible multiple attackers. We have the right to defend ourselves in cases such riots, which we have seen too many times in our state.

Limiting this ability by targeting semi-automatic firearms is not the answer. According to official FBI and U.S. Department of Justice reports, the rates of violent crime in the U.S. are now at their lowest level in 40 years. And the fact that there are more guns in law-abiding citizens hands today than before doesn't come into play? Politicians don’t face the injustice and evil of the world we the people live in. Politicians have luxuries that we the people will never see.

There are bad people in this world. I don’t postulate that I am the best of people but I am a tax paying, God fearing, law-abiding citizen of these United States and a resident in our great state of California. Crime does not go away with these gun laws. Statistics prove this. You can’t ignore that. These gun laws take away the protection of those who are not criminals and turn them into criminals.

Please consider the voice of many individuals who love the United States of America and the freedoms it brings. I pray for our state, you and your ability to make clear logical decisions and hope that my voice will be heard in the sea of chaos you handle. Thank you for your time.

I sent three letters today. One to Brown, one to my assemblyman and one to my state senator. I kept them all fairly short. The letters to the legislators were nearly the same. This went to the assemblyman:

          Dear Assemblyman Wagner:

I am writing to urge you to oppose any new anti-gun legislation proposed or offered by your colleagues in the California State Legislature. Specific to the State Assembly, I urge you to oppose AB 169; AB 170; AB 174; AB 180 (187?); AB 231 and AB 232. I also urge to you oppose any bills that I failed to list that would in any way further restrict the ability of Californians to own or obtain guns or ammunition, or impose additional taxes or costs on California gun owners.

As one of the few remaining Republicans in the California Assembly, your vote on these bills and opposition to new gun control measures is critical. We cannot count on Governor Brown to contain the radical gun-grabbers in his party, but we can hope that the Democrats do not get supermajority support for their scheme and the Governor vetoes some of the more ridiculous legislation. Regardless, we need you and every other Republican to stand firm on this issue.

          With kindest regards
          /s/

The letter to the senator substituted senate bills and references, but was otherwise the same. I sent this to Brown:

          Dear Governor Brown:

I am writing to urge you to voice your opposition to any new anti-gun legislation introduced in the California State Legislature, and to veto any anti-gun bills that pass. Specifically, I urge you to oppose/veto SB 47; SB 53; SB 108; SB 127; and SB 140 as well as AB 169; AB 170; AB 174; AB 180 (187?); AB 231 and AB 232. I also urge to you oppose/veto any bills that I failed to list that would in any way further restrict the ability of Californians to own or obtain guns or ammunition, or impose additional taxes or costs on California gun owners.

Unlike the radical gun-grabbers in your party, you seem to understand that Californians do have Second Amendment rights just like the citizens of (most) other states. You also seem to realize that gun control laws do not prevent crimes, or keep firearms out of the hands of criminals. The bills listed above would do nothing but make criminals out of decent, law-abiding citizens. They would also engender expensive, protracted litigation and encourage many of the most productive citizens remaining in California to flee the state in search of greener pastures. Please help preserve what is left of the right to keep and bear arms in California.

          With kindest regards.

These are the first snail mail letters I've ever sent to politicians. All previous contact has been by e-mail or phone. I would have sent them yesterday but I was so angry and frustrated I would have risked descending into profanity.

Awesome. People think writing won't help but it's better then saying "I'm moving."
