Can a state change laws without the people's vote?

Just read a few articles about how our lovely state of CA is in competition with New York for tougher gun laws. Seems as if some of these laws that are being proposing are extremely significant.

Can a state pass these laws without the peoples vote?

Is there anything we can do prevent these laws passing?

    Thanks for your replies.

We are a republic. Of course lawmakers can change laws. It's why we elect them. To represent us.

In California there are plenty of ways to prevent laws from passing. There are also ways to get things straight in front of voters.

Do some research and you'll find many avenues of redress.

In most states that is the only way a law gets changed (with the exception of a court case).
California has a two pronged law making system.

      1. Someone in the legislature writes a law, it gets voted on by the legislators and passes, then the Governor signs it into law.
      2. Some citizen writes a proposition, submits the paperwork and pays a fee, then goes about gathering enough signatures on a petition to get the proposition on the ballot. If enough people vote for the proposition, it becomes law.

If you haven't seen it with your own eyes,
or heard it with your own ears,
don't make it up with your small mind,
or spread it with your big mouth.

Until control freak statists intent on micro-managing the lives of everyone around them stop being elected by the populace, our ONLY redress is the court system.

I hate it when people say this. It's this kind of thinking that causes people to sit at home instead of going to the polls.

Yes, I get it that one vote in a sea of millions doesn't seem like much. Still, if the "silent majority" would speak up we wouldn't be in the situation we are now.

So, rather than complain to us, which does nothing, write your congressman, go to the polls and speak to those who are not gun enthusiasts. It's time we promote our hobby rather than just argue with each other.

I have voted every time for the last 18 years, but it still feels like I'm in this state
Q: What was the most positive result of the "Cash for Clunkers" program?
A: It took 95% of the Obama bumper stickers off the road.
